Japan is filled with unique and beautiful traditions, and one of them happens in Autumn. It’s known as Shichi-Go-San, or “Seven-Five-Three.” In this blog, I’ll explain what Shichi-Go-San is and how Japanese families celebrate it. I’ll also share some useful English expressions you can use when talking about Japanese culture, and finally, I’ll tell you about my own experience with this Japanese family event.
What Is Shichi-Go-San?
Shichi-Go-San is a traditional celebration held every year on November 15th. It is for three- and seven-year-old girls and three- and five-year-old boys. The purpose of this event is to celebrate children’s healthy growth and wish for their future happiness.
On this day, children wear beautiful traditional clothing such as kimono or hakama. Families visit shrines to offer prayers and take photos. Another fun part of the day is Chitose Ame, which means “thousand-year candy.” It’s a long, thin red-and-white candy that symbolizes long life and good luck. Children carry it in a special bag decorated with cranes and turtles, which are symbols of longevity in Japan.
