こんにちは、皆さん！ニッキーです。今回も「ニッキーの日記」をお届けします！
今回のブログでは、アメリカの8月についてご紹介します。天気や過ごし方、日常生活など、日本とは少し違うアメリカの夏の終わりの様子をお話ししたいと思います。
実は、日本とは異なる点も多く、「そんな違いがあるんだ！」と驚くこともあるかもしれません。
8月は私が一年の中でも特に好きな季節の一つなので、このテーマについてお話しできるのをとても楽しみにしています！
新学期の始まり
アメリカの8月を象徴する出来事のひとつが、新学期のスタートです。
アメリカの夏休みはなんと約3か月間あります。6月から8月までは授業も宿題もテストもなく、学校は完全にお休みです。前の学年は5月に終わり、新しい学年は地域によって異なりますが、8月下旬から9月上旬に始まります。
そのため、8月は新学期に向けて文房具や学校用品を買いそろえたり、長い夏休みのあとに友達と再会できることを楽しみにしたり、学校生活が始まる前の最後の自由な時間を満喫したりと、とても忙しい時期になります。また、5月に小学校・中学校・高校を卒業した生徒たちは、新しい学校での生活をスタートさせる準備も進めています。
この頃になると、小さな子どもたちはサマーキャンプや家族旅行から戻り、高校生や大学生は夏休み中のアルバイトやインターンシップを終える時期でもあります。
さらに、8月は7月に比べて少し暑さが和らぐので、泳いだり、自然の中へ出かけたりと、屋外で過ごすのにもぴったりの季節です。
夏のごちそうを食べよう！
以前、「アメリカ独立記念日（7月4日）」についてのブログでもご紹介しましたが、アメリカには夏の定番グルメがたくさんあり、その多くは8月になっても引き続き楽しまれています。
8月も、多くの家庭でバーベキューを楽しむ季節です。ホットドッグやハンバーガー、スペアリブ、ポテトチップス、スイカ、ビール、ソーダなどが食卓に並び、家族や友人と夏のひとときを満喫します。
また、この時期はトマトが旬を迎えるため、ハンバーガーのトッピングにしたり、甘みたっぷりのとうもろこしを丸ごと焼いてバーベキューの付け合わせにしたりするのも定番です。
さらに、私の母が暮らすニューイングランド地方（ボストンやニューヨーク周辺）では、ロブスターが旬を迎える季節でもあります。私が特に毎年楽しみにしていたのは、ロブスター・マカロニ＆チーズ。濃厚なチーズとロブスターのうま味がたっぷり詰まった、夏ならではのごちそうです。
私の故郷で過ごす8月
アメリカのほとんどの地域では、8月になると7月に比べて暑さが少し和らぎます。特に日本と比べると、過ごしやすく感じられることが多いです。
しかし、私の故郷であるロサンゼルスでは、福岡で毎年経験するような厳しい暑さになることはあまりありません。とはいえ、ロサンゼルスはとても広い街なので、住んでいる場所によって気温は大きく異なります。
ダウンタウン寄りや内陸部に住んでいると、気温が35℃くらいまで上がることもあります。一方、私は海に近い地域で育ったので、一番暑い日でも28℃くらいでした。
ありがたいことに、ロサンゼルスには湿気がほとんどありません。そのため、気温が高くても空気はカラッとしていて、夏の間中、快適に外で過ごすことができます。
ロサンゼルスでは、夏に開催されるお祭りはそれほど多くありません。しかし、面白いことに、ダウンタウンにある日本人街「リトルトーキョー」では、約1週間にわたって日本のお祭りとパレードが開催されます。
このイベントは「二世ウィーク（Nisei Week）」と呼ばれ、1934年から毎年開催されています。
来場者や参加者は、太鼓の演奏や音頭踊りを楽しめるパレードのほか、生け花、盆栽、書道、武道の展示、日本の屋台料理など、日本文化をさまざまな形で楽しむことができます。
このお祭りは、例年お盆の時期とほぼ同じタイミングで開催されます。もし暑さや湿気を気にせず日本の夏祭りを体験してみたいなら、ぜひおすすめしたいイベントです。
最高の8月！
私が8月を大好きな理由はたくさんあります。7月よりも少し暑さが和らぎ、夏ならではの食べ物やアクティビティをまだ楽しめること、そして実は8月は私の誕生月でもあるからです！
福岡の8月も、とても暑いですが私は気に入っています。街には活気があふれ、エネルギーに満ちた季節だと感じます。

August in America – Late Summer Vibes
Hello, everyone! It’s Nicky, back with another entry in ニッキーの日記！
In today’s post I will be discussing August in America – the weather, the activities, daily life, etc. It is quite a bit different from Japan and some things may surprise you. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, so I’m excited to dive into this topic!
Back to School
One of the defining features of American life in America is going back to school. Our summer vacation is actually three months long – there are no classes, homework, tests, etc. from June through August. The previous school year ends in May, and the next school year begins in late August or very early September (depending on which region you live in). Therefore, August is busy with buying school supplies, getting excited to be reunited with your classmates after such a long break, and trying to soak up your last moments of freedom before you return to your academic endeavors. Of course, many students are also changing schools after graduating elementary / junior / high school the previous May.
Many younger students have returned from summer camp and family vacations by this point, and high school and university students are wrapping up their summer jobs and internships. It is also a bit cooler than July, so it’s perfect weather for spending time outside swimming or going out into nature.
Let’s Eat!
As mentioned in my previous blog about the fourth of July, there are many classic staple summer foods that carry over into August. Many families are still enjoying barbecues in August – hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, potato chips, watermelon, beer, soda, etc. This is also the best time of year to enjoy tomatoes as a topping and sweet corn on the cob as a side for your barbecue foods! If you live in the New England (Boston, New York, etc.) area as my mom does, then it’s also the peak season for lobster! In particular I always looked forward to eating lobster macaroni and cheese.
August on My Home Turf
In most of America, August is a bit more manageable with the heat compared to July, especially in comparison to Japan. Summer in Los Angeles (my hometown), however, doesn’t experience quite the blistering heat that Fukuoka gets every year. It does depend, though, on where exactly in the city you live. If you live farther out towards downtown or in the valley, it can easily reach 35 degrees. However, as I grew up closer to the shore, generally the hottest days were around 28 degrees. Thankfully, as there is no humidity, even when the temperature is high it is quite dry and enjoyable to be outside all summer long!
Los Angeles doesn’t have too many festivals in summer. However, funnily enough there is a one-week long Japanese festival and parade in Little Tokyo (a Japanese district downtown). It is called Nisei (2世) Week and has been held annually since 1934. Viewers and participants can enjoy parades with taiko drumming and ondo street dancing. There are also cultural exhibitions for ikebana, bonsai, calligraphy, martial arts, Japanese food stalls, etc. The festival is typically around the same time as Obon, so if you ever want to experience a Japanese summer festival minus the heat and humidity, I highly recommend it!

There are many reasons I love August – the weather has cooled down a bit, you can still enjoy summer foods and activities, and it also happens to be my birthday! Despite the intense heat, I also enjoy it in Fukuoka as well. It is a month teeming with life!
