Old Habits Die Hard【福岡市英会話】

【Josh先生】

みなさん、お久しぶりです!

ニュージーランドでは、ほとんどの会話の始まりに天気の話をするのが定番です。ほかにそれほど話すことがないからかもしれません!最近は少しどんよりした天気や雨の日もありますが、涼しくなってきたので、私は快適に過ごしています。

今回は、習慣について書いてみたいと思います。

タイトルの「Old habits die hard」は、習慣についての有名なイディオムです。さて、これは一体どんな意味だと思いますか?

Josh

Old habits die hard

Long time no see, folks. In New Zealand, it’s customary to chat about the weather at the start of most conversations (because there isn’t much else happening!). I’ve been enjoying the cooler weather, even if it has been a tad grey and wet. Today I’ll be writing about habits. The title “Old habits die hard” is a famous idiom about habits. Can you guess what it means?

A typical morning in the life of Josh

Generally speaking, I’m a creature of habit. I like to get up in the morning, have a shower, make a coffee, and I usually eat the same breakfast: two pieces of toast with butter and marmite. I help the kids get ready for school. I’ll chat with them about their upcoming day, and whether they have everything prepped. Once the kids head off to school, I might go for a run with my wife, or a big walk. I like to walk around new suburbs that are near my house, or go running to Ohori Park. On the way home, we usually stop off for an iced latte in the Chikagai in Tenjin at Truffle Bakery. If I’m feeling peckish, I’ll grab one of their delicious treats from the cabinet – lately I’ve usually been ordering the croque monsieur.

Playing music to relax

Back in New Zealand, we had an electric piano and a guitar at home, so whenever I felt like playing some music it was easy to do. I find playing music mostly relaxing and meditative (although sometimes it can be frustrating too…) As our apartment is on the smaller side in Japan, I haven’t been able to practice music at all. Lately, I’ve discovered handpans on Youtube. It’s a kind of steel drum, and the sound it makes is mesmerising. I’d like to learn how to play one – but they are eye-wateringly expensive, so I’m hesitating on purchasing one. But if I could start a new habit, it would be to learn the handpan.

Say what you mean

As I’m sure you know, in English we sometimes use idioms and sayings to express ourselves. I’ve already used a couple in this article. Idioms can be difficult to understand when learning another language because the literal meaning of the words is different from what the speaker actually means. “Old habits die hard” means it’s tough to stop behaviours that you’ve been doing for a long time. “Creature of habit” doesn’t mean one is an animal made out of habit, it means you like to do the same things most days. “Second nature” isn’t a nature that comes second, rather a skill that comes easy to you because you’ve done it so many times.

If you’re interested in habits, I can recommend the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. I listened to it a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It will help you start some new habits, and may even help stop some old ones you aren’t so fond of anymore (but just can’t seem to quit).
