Hey everyone,

This week in Kensington we’ll be talking about our families. This is one of our core lessons and is a class with some very important grammar for our more beginner students. 

We’ll be using third person, use the apostrophe “s” and talk about different family members in our families. 

It’s a very useful class, please prepare well and speak a lot in class!

What we are doing in Kensington
Treading Water

Hey everyone,

This year has been a very busy one for us here in Kensington, we have worked hard on expanding our test-prep classes, our private classes for younger learners, our group classes for Kindergarten and Elementary school students and we are now very confident about helping out students of all age groups.

Yet, hiring competent staff and teachers has been very hard this year. I know it’s not only us and it’s more of an industry-wide phenomenon but we have been looking for teachers and assistants for our kids schools since January and our hiring is still not completed. Without our staff roster completed it’s very hard to work on and proceed with new and exciting projects and as such I sometimes get the feeling that we are treading water. 

It is what it is though, the borders will at some point open up and more foreign teachers will finally be allowed to come to Japan and then some of our struggles with hiring will be alleviated. Until then, we’ll do the best we can with what we have.

こんにちは、みなさん。

今年はケンジントン英会話にとって非常に忙しい年でした。
私たちはテスト対策レッスン、若い学習者のためのプライベートレッスン、幼稚園と小学生のためのグループレッスンの拡大に一生懸命取り組んできました。
そのため、すべての年齢層の生徒さんに向けて、英語学習のお手伝いをすることに今とても自信を持っています。

それでも、有能なスタッフと講師を雇うのは今年は非常に困難でした。
それは私たちだけではなく、業界全体の現象であることはわかっていますが、1月からキッズスクールの講師とアシスタントの採用がまだ完了していません。
スタッフの採用が終わらなければ、新しいエキサイティングなプロジェクトに取り組み、進めるのは非常に困難です。
私はときどき足踏み状態を続けているように感じます。

とはいえ、いつか国境が開かれ、そしてやっと外国人講師の来日が許可され、採用に苦労することも少なくなるでしょう。
それまでは、私たちが持っているものでできる限り最善を尽くします。

Business English
Being a good listener

Hello everyone,

I think one of the most important skills in a businessperson whether they are employers or employees is listening. Active listening is hard honestly, it requires paying a lot of attention to what is being said and trying to genuinely understand what the person talking is feeling and wants to convey. 

Too many times in meetings, while another person is talking we are thinking about what we are going to say and as such don’t pay necessary attention to what he or she is saying. I also do that at times of course but when I catch myself doing it I always try to refocus on the speaker and engage in active listening.

Active listening is very important when learning a language as well, paying attention to the speaker and focusing on what they say is very important in improving one’s listening skill.

聞き上手であること

こんにちは、みなさん。

雇用主であろうと従業員であろうと、ビジネスマンにとって最も重要なスキルの一つは、耳を傾けることだと思います。
積極的に耳を傾けることは正直言って難しく、話されていることに細心の注意を払い、話している人が感じていることや伝えたいことを真に理解しようとする必要があります。

会議でよくあるのは、誰かが話していても、自分が次に何を言おうとしているのかを考えているので、その人の発言に必要な注意を払っていないことです。
もちろん私も時々そうしてしまうことがあるので、自分でそれをやっていることに気づいたら、話している人に改めて集中して積極的に聞くようにしています。

言語を学ぶときも積極的なリスニングはとても重要です。
話している人に注意を払い、話されていることに集中することは、リスニングスキルを向上させる上で非常に重要です。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Ask many questions

Hello everyone,

One very important skill for our higher level students is to be able to ask good questions. Usually starting by asking the teachers or another student’s opinion, listening to the opinion, processing what was said and asking good questions. Being a good listener and asking good questions is a very important high level skill.

In the lower level classes we mostly focus on our students speaking as much as possible, in our higher level classes whilst of course again we want our students to talk as much as possible we also want to refine their ability to analyse information on the fly.

So please ask many questions, listen carefully to your teacher’s answer and try to continue the conversation with good questions!

こんにちは、みなさん。

英語が中上級者の生徒さんにとってとても重要なスキルの一つは、良い質問ができることです。
だいたい、講師や他の生徒さんの意見を求めることから始め、その意見を聞き、聞いたことをを処理し、良い質問を投げかけます。
良い聞き手で、良い質問をすることは非常に重要な高レベルのスキルです。

初中級者レベルのレッスンでは、ほとんどの場合、生徒さんができるだけ話すことに重点を置いています。
中上級者レベルのレッスンでも、もちろん、生徒さんにできるだけ多く話してもらいたいのですが、情報をその場で分析する能力も向上させたいと考えています。

なので、たくさん質問をして、講師の答えに注意深く耳を傾け、良い質問で会話を続けてみてください！

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Seeking Enlightenment

Hey everyone,

In the past couple of years I have gotten really into meditation. It started a couple of years ago when I read a book about meditation which was on Bill Gates’ recommended book list. I downloaded the app recommended by the book and I started meditating on and off for the next year and a half. 

I don’t really understand how and why but generally speaking when I keep up with my meditation habits I usually feel much calmer than usual and very happy with how my days are unfolding, when I don’t meditate I tend to feel rather irritable. 

Recently I have made a habit of meditating every morning soon after I get up for 10 minutes. I’m on a 35 day streak and I feel as calm as Gandhi!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介
悟りを求めて

こんにちは、みなさん。

過去数年で、私は本当に瞑想にハマりました。
それは数年前、ビル・ゲイツおすすめの本のリストに載っている、瞑想の本を読んだ時に始まりました。
この本で推奨されているアプリをダウンロードして、次の1年半のあいだ瞑想を行いました。

理由はよくわかりませんが、一般的に、瞑想を習慣づけると、いつもよりずっと落ち着いて、日々の様子にとても満足します。
瞑想しないと、ややイライラする傾向があります。

最近では、毎朝起きてすぐの10分間は瞑想する習慣をつけています。
私は35日間連続で成功していて、まるでガンジーと同じくらい落ち着いているかのように感じます!

Express Opinion

Hello everyone,

This week in our group lessons around Fukuoka and online we are going to practice how to express our opinions on a variety of subjects. This is one of the most important subjects in the Kensington curriculum and since expressing opinion and learning how to provide reasoning and expand is such an integral part of our students journey towards fluency, we use parts of this lesson in a very large number of different Kensington subjects. 

Please come prepared and express a lot of opinions in our classes!

What we are doing in Kensington
Summer school in our kids school

Last year we organised the first Kensington Kids Academy summer school and it was an amazing success. The kids had a blast and improved their English so much.

This year we are going to try and repeat last year’s success and if possible also build and improve upon it. Our summer school will take place in our HiraoJosui school from July 25th to Aug 5th and we have arranged a tonne of fun varied activities for our students to improve their English whilst having a great time!

昨年、私たちはケンジントンキッズアカデミーの初めてのサマースクールを開始し、そしてそれは驚くべき成功でした。
子供たちは楽しいひとときを過ごし、英語もとても上達させました。

今年も昨年の成功を繰り返し、可能であればそれをさらにアップデートし改善する予定です。
サマースクールは7月25日から8月5日まで平尾城水校で行われます。
生徒さんたちが楽しい時間を過ごしながら英語を上達させることができるように、さまざまな楽しいアクティビティをご用意しています！

Hiring Vocabulary

Today I would like to introduce you some vocabulary related to hiring. Every year in Kensington we look for new staff and teachers. Usually every March one or two of our staff or teachers quit our school, usually to return back to their countries or move to a different area. 

This year in March, two of our teachers quit, one moved back to her home country in the US and the other moved to a different prefecture. In their place we have already hired 3 teachers and we are looking for one or two more. 

We usually find new staff by posting a job ad. Many people that are interested in the job send us applications with their resumes and cover letters. We check all the applications and choose the best candidates for online interviews. 

After we have interviewed them online, then we see them in person at our schools. Our hiring process is long and we are very selective on whom we hire. 

Hiring the right people is one of the most important decisions we make and I think it’s a big part of why our school is successful.

オンライン面接をした後は、教室で直接会います。
私たちはかなり時間をかけ、厳選して採用をしています。

適切な人材を採用することは、最も重要な決定事項の1つであり、ケンジントン英会話が成功する理由の大部分だと思っています。
