Let’s talk about fireworks! Hanabi taikai, or “Fireworks Festivals,” are one of the most iconic parts of summer in Japan. They also happen to be my favorite form of festival. From wearing yukatas to cooling down with a snow cone, fireworks festivals bring people together to celebrate and enjoy the summer in style. In this article, I’ll show you some useful English phrases you can use to talk about Japanese fireworks festivals. These phrases are helpful when chatting with foreign friends, writing about your experiences online, or practicing in English class at Kensington.
Useful Phrases for Talking About Fireworks Festivals
1. “Let’s go to a fireworks festival!”
This is a natural and friendly way to invite someone to a fireworks festival.

This is another phrase you can use to invite someone to go to a fireworks festival or watch them from afar. This is a more casual phrase you can use.

My Fireworks Festival Memory
One of my favorite fireworks memories is from my childhood, when I was in elementary school visiting my grandparents in Fukushima, Japan. I went to a countryside fireworks festival that, by today’s standards, definitely would’ve been considered way too close to the action. The fireworks were launched right above us—not far off in the distance like usual.
It was honestly kind of dangerous, we had pieces of fireworks falling down and actually hitting people in the crowd! But because of that, it was also the most exciting and unforgettable fireworks experience of my life. Looking straight up and seeing the sky explode with color right overhead is something I’ll never forget.
