みなさん、こんにちは！ニッキーです。今回も「ニッキーの日記」の新しい記事をお届けします！
今日の投稿では、クリスマス、そしてクリスマスシーズンについてお話しします。欧米ではよく「一年で最も素晴らしい季節（The Most Wonderful Time of the Year）」と呼ばれていますね。喜びが伝染するように広がり、愛と無償の贈り物に満ちた季節です。暖かく着込んで、家の中でぬくぬくと過ごし、きらめくクリスマスライトや、毎年おなじみのクリスマス飾りが部屋を照らす中、大切な人たちに囲まれる――そんな時間です。
今年は実は福岡で過ごす予定です。アメリカにいる家族には会えなくて寂しいですが、福岡でもこの楽しい季節を祝い、満喫できるアクティビティや過ごし方がたくさんあることに感謝しています。この陽気で楽しい季節を思いきり楽しみたいと思います！
The Ghost of Christmas Present（現代アメリカの祝い方）
生徒たちはよく私に「アメリカのクリスマスってどんな感じですか？」と聞いてきます。ほとんどの人が、「『ホーム・アローン』を見たことがあるのですが、アメリカのクリスマスは本当にあんな感じなのですか？」という前置きが一緒についてきます。簡潔な答えは……はい、その通りです！
『ホーム・アローン』は、さまざまな点でアメリカのクリスマスをとても正確に描いています。
アメリカの家の中は、たくさんの飾り付けでいっぱいになります。天井まで届く大きなクリスマスツリーがあり、暖炉の上には靴下（ストッキング）が飾られます。そしてもちろん、大切な家族と一緒にプレゼントを贈り合い、豪華なクリスマスディナーを楽しみます。
日本とは違い、アメリカのクリスマスは家族の祝日です。ロマンチックな日や、カップル・友人同士で過ごす日とは考えられていません。家族ごとにそれぞれの伝統がありますが、今回は私の家（そして多くの家庭）のクリスマスが、普段どのように祝われているかをご紹介します。
12月の間、私たちは家族にとって思い出のあるさまざまなクリスマス特番や映画を観ます（私の家族は『チャーリー・ブラウンのクリスマス』が大好きです！）。また、近所を歩き回って、家を飾ったクリスマスのイルミネーションを楽しみます。クリスマス・イブには、子どもたちをわくわくさせるためにプレゼントを1つだけ開けることが許されます。クリスマスの朝には家族がリビングルームに集まり、順番に一人ずつプレゼントを開けていきます。その日の大半は、子どもたちが新しいおもちゃで遊び、大人はおしゃべりを楽しんで過ごします。そして夜には、みんなでダイニングルームに集まり、盛大なクリスマスのごちそうを囲みます！（私の家族では、メイン料理としてスモークハム、七面鳥、またはローストビーフを作るのが定番です！）
The Ghost of Christmas Past（私の特別なクリスマスの思い出）
私は子どもの頃の素晴らしいクリスマスの思い出を数えきれないほど持っていますが、その中でも特に印象に残っている一日を紹介します。
小学1年生のとき、冬休み前の学校最終日に、クラスで一日中クリスマスのお祝いをしました。教室の机や椅子をすべて端に寄せ、みんなが自分の寝袋や枕を持ってきて、部屋の真ん中に敷きました。先生がプロジェクターでクリスマス映画を流してくれて、私たちはマシュマロ入りのホットチョコレートを飲みながら、ワクワクして映画を観ました。
映画の後は、その日の残りの時間を使って、さまざまなクリスマスにちなんだアクティビティをしました。両親や家族に送るクリスマスカードを書いたり、ジンジャーブレッドハウスを作ったり、クリスマスキャロルを歌ったりしました。そして最後に、もう一本クリスマス映画を観て一日を締めくくりました。
その日は、純粋なクリスマスの雰囲気を心から満喫できた一日で、決して忘れないでしょう。
もちろん、ほかにも数えきれないほどの思い出があります。ほとんどのアメリカの子どもはみんなサンタクロースを信じていて、クリスマスの朝に階段を下り、ツリーの下に並んだたくさんのプレゼントを目にした、あの魔法のような朝のことは決して忘れません。今でもそれを思い出すだけで、心が温かくなります。
The Ghost of Christmas Future（2026年、そしてその先を思って）
もちろん、クリスマスのすぐ後には大晦日と元日がやってきます。これらの祝日が続けてあるのは素晴らしいことで、大切な人たちと一緒に過ごしながら、過ぎ去った一年を振り返り、次の一年に思いを巡らせることができます。この時期は、ひと息ついて自分の人生がどのように進んでいるのかを見つめ直し、立ち止まって感謝の気持ちを抱き、これから先に向けて軌道修正をするのにぴったりの季節です。
私個人として、2026年に向けた目標はただ一つです。それは、もっと人生を楽しむために「今この瞬間」を大切にして生きることです。最近、私は遠い将来のこと（気候変動やAIなど）についてストレスを感じることが多く、福岡や地球で生きているというよりも、「インターネットの中で生きている」ように感じてしまっています。だからこそ、2026年は今この瞬間を生き、現在の自分の状況に対してより感謝の気持ちを持ちたいと本気で思っています。
私は健康で、安全で、コミュニティがあり、生きがいもあります。20年後、50年後、100年後に何が起こるかに関わらず、少なくとも今この瞬間、私は満ち足りています。そして、その気持ちが、私のすべての行動や人間関係に表れるようにしたいのです。
クリスマスまとめ
まとめとして、結論として、クリスマスは一年の中でも間違いなく私が最も好きな時期のひとつです。家族や友人と分かち合える愛や感謝の気持ちは、本当に特別なものです。クリスマスのイルミネーション、テレビの特番、飾り付け、食事など、そのすべてが、この季節をさらに特別なものにしてくれます。アメリカにいても、日本にいても、たとえどこにいても、この時期は私にとっていつも大切な時間です。
今年のクリスマスは、皆さんはどのように過ごしますか？どんな過ごし方であっても、家族、喜び、そして愛に満ちた、素敵なホリデーシーズンになることを願っています。それでは、また次回！

Christmas Eve, Please Never Leave!
Hello, everyone! It’s Nicky, back with another entry in ニッキーの日記！
In today’s post I will be discussing Christmas and the Christmas season–or, as it is often referred to in the West, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” It is a season ripe with contagious joy, love, and selfless giving. To get bundled up warm and cozy inside, surrounded by your loved ones, with the twinkling Christmas lights and revised Christmas special illuminating the room. This year I will actually be sticking around in Fukuoka, and though I will miss my family back home, I am grateful that even in Fukuoka there are so many fun activities and ways to be festive and enjoy this merry season!
The Ghost of Christmas Present (Modern American Celebrations)
Students often ask me what Christmas is like in America, nearly always in tandem with the caveat of “I have seen ‘Home Alone’ and am wondering if Christmas is really like that in America?” The short answer is…yes! “Home Alone” is actually a quite accurate depiction of Christmas in America in many ways. The insides of our homes are flooded with decorations. We have a large Christmas tree that extends to the ceiling and stockings over the fireplace. And of course, celebrating our loved ones with presents and a big Christmas dinner feast!
Different from Japan, Christmas in America is a family holiday. It is not seen as romantic or for couples or friends. Each family has their own variation on traditions, but here is how mine (and many families’ Christmas) usually functions:
Throughout December we watch a variety of Christmas specials and movies that hold sentimental value for our family (my family loves the Charlie Brown Christmas Special!) Throughout December we also walk around neighborhoods to enjoy the Christmas lights people have decorated their houses with. On Christmas Eve the kids are allowed to open just one present as a treat to get them excited. On Christmas morning, the family gathers in the living room and everyone takes turns opening their presents one at a time. The majority of the day is spent with kids playing with their new toys and the adults enjoying each other’s company. Everyone comes back together in the dining room that night for a big Christmas feast! (My family usually cooks a smoked ham, a turkey, or roast beef as the main entree!)
The Ghost of Christmas Past (My Special Christmas Memory)
I have an unlimited supply of amazing Christmas memories from my childhood, but I will share one particular day that stands out in my memory. On the last day of school before winter vacation in first grade my class was having an all-day Christmas celebration. We moved all of the desks and chairs to the side of the room and everyone brought their own sleeping bag and pillows to put in the middle. On the projector my teacher played a Christmas movie and we all excitedly watched the movie while drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows. After the movie we spent the rest of the day doing various Christmas-related activities–writing Christmas cards to our parents and family, building gingerbread houses, singing Christmas carols, etc. We then ended the day with another Christmas movie. It was a full day where I truly got to revel in pure Christmas spirit, and I will never forget it!
Of course, I have countless other memories as well. Most every American child believes in Santa, and I will never forget all those magical mornings of walking down the stairs Christmas morning and seeing the litany of presents under the tree. It warms my heart even now just thinking about it!
The Ghost of Christmas Future (Looking Forward to 2026 and Beyond)
Of course, right on the heels of Christmas comes New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day! Having these holidays back-to-back is great because you can enjoy the company of your loved ones while also reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the next one. It is a season perfect for catching your breath, assessing how everything in your life is going, pausing and taking a moment of gratitude, and course-correcting moving forward.
For me, personally, I have only one goal going into 2026: to live in the present in order to enjoy my life more. Recently I have been feeling stressed about the distant future (climate change, AI, etc.) and feeling like I “live on the internet” more than I live in Fukuoka or even planet Earth. And so in 2026 I am really aiming to live in the moment and have more gratitude towards my present situation. I am healthy, I am safe, I have community, and I have purpose. Regardless of what may happen in 20, 50, 100 years, right now I am content! And I want all of my actions and relationships to reflect that.
The Christmas Conclusion
In conclusion, Christmas is absolutely one of my favorite times of the year. The amount of love and gratitude I get to share with my family and friends is so special. The Christmas lights, the TV specials, the decorations, the food, etc. only serve to make it even more special. Whether I’m in America, Japan, or anywhere else, this time of year will always be precious to me.
