To Streamline

Here is a nice easy expression we use in business English to describe the process of making things more simple and efficient. “streamline”. I already mentioned it in another post earlier but we have just done this with our school curriculum so let’s use that in the example sentence. 

Example

We have just streamlined our curriculum to make it easier for you to track your progress and know what you will be studying further in advance than you do now.

Hello there, any big plans for the weekend? Our everyday English expression this week is an idiom related to spring: spring something to someone it means to suddenly tell or ask someone something when they don’t expect it.
 Last week the boss sprung on us a new project on Friday afternoon!
 Hope she never does that again. I hate surprises!

「spring something to someone」とは、予期しないときに突然誰かに何かを伝えたり、尋ねたりすることを意味します。

Last week the boss sprung on us a new project on Friday afternoon!
(先週、金曜日の午後に上司が急に私たちに新しいプロジェクトについて伝えました！)

Hope she never does that again. I hate surprises!

Closing and Opening a Deal（取引の成立と開始）【ビジネス英語】

Closing and Opening a Deal

In Business, especially in the corporate world, there is such a thing as closing and opening a deal.

To close a deal doesn’t mean to “cancel” a deal, however. It means to actually finalize and make a deal. Opening a deal means to provide an offer.

This is a bit confusing, but basically:

“Closing a deal” = Finalizing an offer.

“Opening a deal” = Making a proposal.

You might hear this in a lot of business-based movies, especially ones about finance. I don’t use it and I don’t think most native speakers do in normal working conditions, but if you work in corporate, especially in America, you might hear it!

ビジネス、特に企業の世界では、Closing and Opening a Deal (取引の成立と開始) があります。

ただし、close a deal (取引を成立させる/まとめる)は、取引を「キャンセル」するという意味ではありません。
closing a deal は実際に最終決定して取引を行うことを意味します。
opening a deal は、オファーを提供することを意味します。

少し紛らわしいですが、基本的には：

「Closing a deal」= オファーの確定
「Opening a deal」= 提案する

このフレーズは、ビジネスをベースにした映画、特に金融に関する映画で耳にするかもしれません。
私は普段このフレーズを使ってないし、ほとんどのネイティブスピーカーも職場で使う機会はないと思いますが、企業、特にアメリカで働いている場合は、このフレーズを聞くことがあるかも！

「gonna」と「wanna」は誰でも自由に使っていい

“gonna”, “wanna”

When you’re speaking English with people, you’ll often hear native speakers use “gonna” and “wanna” instead of “going to” and “want to”. You’ll also hear it instead of “would like to” as well.

This is basically casual or standard use in English, and you can use it freely. The only time it’s important to make sure you’re clear is in official testing situations, because “gonna” and “wanna” are technically not correct grammar. That being said, use it freely in conversation – and conversational fluency is the most important thing, after all.

Hi everyone, how was your weekend? Our bizspeak is Brand Awareness. When customers or people in general see a brand logo and connect it to the product or service, they show brand awareness.

Morinosuke: Our furniture company Furnico is still new in Japan, so we need to work hard to develop brand awareness.

Jane: I totally agree. Our main competitor, IKEA, has excellent brand awareness in Japan, don’t they?

Today’s business English expression is “let go” which basically just is a nice way to tell someone that they are fired.
Example

“I’m sorry Tim but I’m afraid we are going to have to let you go next month. We are making cutbacks across the board and it’s last in first out I’m afraid.”

At the drop of a hat

Hello there everyone!

Since we are talking about fast food this weekend in class, I’d like to introduce this phrase to you. At the drop of a hat means to do something quickly, without hesitation ,and quite often without thinking or self control.

Examples

“I don’t enjoy working with Don, he gets mad at the drop of a hat and is always screaming at the other staff.”

“I used to be very shy when I was a teenager. My face would go red at the drop of a hat.”

副詞的に使う「kind of」 について

It’s “kind of” —

During my classes, I’ve had a few students ask me about what this “kind of” thing is that I say in my natural speech.

I tend to say it quite often. I’m not sure about other students, but I know a lot of people personally who also apply it in their everyday English speech. What does it mean?

It’s basically a kind of adverb in casual language. You can roughly translate it to “A little”, “somewhat”, “quite”. Adverbs are always rather broad in what they measure because it’s a feeling, but that’s pretty much what it describes when it’s used in language.

So the next time you hear me say “kind of”, just remember that it’s an adverb…kind of.

私が会話で使っている「kind of」について、レッスンで何人かの生徒さんに尋ねられました。

私は「kind of」をかなり頻繁に言う傾向があります。
他の生徒さんはどうか分かりませんが、日常英会話で「kind of 」を使っている人はたくさんいます。
「kind of」とはどういう意味でしょうか？

基本的にはカジュアルな言葉の中での副詞の一種です。
大まかに「少し」「やや」「まあまあ」などに翻訳できます。
副詞は感覚であるため表すものはかなり広範囲ですが、だいたいその文脈の中に出てきているものについて修飾しているだけです。
なので、次に私が「kind of」と言うのを聞いたときは、それが副詞であることを思い出してください。

“For a change”

How’s everyone doing? Any plans for the weekend? Having tacos for dinner tomorrow night for a change? Sticking to this week’s lesson theme “Changes”, our everyday English expression is “for a change”. It means doing something different from what you usually do or something happens in the company, city etc that usually doesn’t happen.

Morinosuke: Jane, we’ve been going to Europe on vacation every year, Jane. Why don’t we go somewhere in SouthEast Asia for a change this year?
Jane: Good idea, Morinosuke.

今週のレッスンテーマは「Changes（変化）」なので、今日は「for a change（たまには、気分転換に、趣向を変えて）」という英語表現をご紹介します。

「for a change」とは、普段とは違うことをしたり、会社や都市などで通常は起こらないことをしたりすることを意味します。

例

もりのすけ：
Jane, we’ve been going to Europe on vacation every year, Jane. Why don’t we go somewhere in SouthEast Asia for a change this year?
(ジェーン、私たちは毎年、休暇でヨーロッパに行っているね。今年は趣向を変えて東南アジアのどこかに行かない？ )
