言語学習を好きになる方法【福岡市英会話】

みなさん、こんにちは！ニッキーです。今回も「ニッキーの日記！」に戻ってきました。

今日の投稿では、外国語を学ぶことについてお話しします。良いこと、難しいこと、そしてちょっと大変なことまで、いろいろな面がありますよね。私たちはそれぞれ違った形で、外国語学習を経験してきたと思いますが、今日は私なりの視点をシェアしたいと思います。

そもそも、人はなぜ外国語を学ぼうと思うのでしょうか？趣味として楽しむためでしょうか。それとも仕事のためでしょうか。もしかすると、その両方かもしれませんね。そして、流暢に話せるようになるまでの道のりには、どんな壁があるのでしょうか？どうすればモチベーションを保ちながら学び続けられるのでしょうか？

そんな疑問も含めて、今日は外国語学習についていろいろと考えてみたいと思います。それでは、今日のブログをどうぞ！

なぜ？なぜ？なぜ？

言語学習の旅に出るとき、まず自分自身に問いかけるべき一番大切な質問は、とてもシンプルです。
それは「なぜ？」です。

なぜその目標を達成するために、一生懸命努力するのでしょうか。どんな理由があって、その言語を学ぼうとしているのでしょうか。

日本では、もちろんほとんどすべての人が中学校と高校で英語を勉強しますよね。（最近では小学校でも始まっていると聞きました！）とはいえ、実際の成果は生徒によって大きく違います。多くの生徒にとって英語は、たくさんある教科の宿題の一つとして「とりあえず終わらせるもの」になってしまっていることが多いのではないでしょうか。

これはアメリカでもとてもよく似ています。アメリカでも中学校や高校では外国語の授業が必修で、多くの生徒が何年もスペイン語を学びます。しかし、長い時間勉強したにもかかわらず、文法・語彙・発音をきちんと使って一文を話せる人は、実はそれほど多くありません。

良い成績を取るためのモチベーションは高くても、言語そのものを本当に理解し、積極的に使おうとする意欲は、残念ながらほとんどないことが多いのです。

しかし、私にとってスペイン語の授業はとても楽しいものでした。まるで幼稚園に戻ったかのように、色や数字、曜日などの言い方をもう一度一から学ぶ感覚がありました。

当時の私にとって、別の言語を流暢に話せるようになるなんて想像もしていませんでした。でも、「もしかしたらできるかもしれない」という可能性には、とてもワクワクさせられました。

高校を卒業するころには、大学で新しい外国語を勉強してみたいと思うようになっていました。アニメを見たこともなければ、漫画を読んだこともなく、箸の使い方すら知らなかったのですが、最終的に私は日本語を選びました。

ひらがなの見た目がとても美しいと思ったこと、そして日本語の発音やリズムがとても好きだったことが理由です。

大学に入学する前の夏、私はひらがなとカタカナを独学するためにワークブックを一冊買いました。そして、そこから先のことはもう「言うまでもない」ですね。

最近の私の勉強方法は、日本語を学び始めたころとはかなり違っています。今でも教科書を使うのは好きですが、今使っているのは英語に頼らず、すべて日本語で書かれている教材です。

また、毎日フラッシュカードで単語を復習したり、小説を読んで語彙や漢字を増やしたりしています。リスニング力を伸ばすために、日本の映画を観たり、日本語のポッドキャストを聞いたりもします。（日本語字幕、もしくは字幕なしで観ることがとても大切です！）

さらに、ときどきNHKの短いニュース動画も見ています。普段あまり見かけない語彙が出てきますし、日常会話とは少し違う、よりフォーマルで正確な日本語の聞き取り練習にもなります。

結局のところ、私にとって一番効果的なのは「真面目な勉強」と「楽しみながらの勉強」をバランスよく組み合わせることです。

もし教科書だけで勉強していたら、きっと退屈になって疲れてしまいます。逆に、楽しいコンテンツだけだと、新しいスキルはあまり身につきません。

やはり大切なのはバランスですね！

みなさんは、普段どのように英語を勉強していますか？

いつも楽しいことばかりじゃない！

私は日本語を学ぶことがとても好きですし、これまでの勉強から本当に多くのものを得てきました。でも、だからといってすべてが順調だったわけではありません！

たとえば、日本語を学び始めた人がまず恐れるのは、やはり漢字ですよね。何千もの文字があり、読み方も数えきれないほどあります。本当に大きなチャレンジだと思います。

また、日本語は音の種類がそれほど多くないため、同じ読み方の言葉が多いのも会話では難しいところです。例えば「橋・端・箸」などはすべて「はし」と読みますよね。

それから、漢字の使い分けも悩むことがあります。
「見る」と「観る」はどちらを使えばいいのか。
「先生に聞いてください」は「先生に質問してください」という意味なのか、それとも「先生の話を聞いてください」という意味なのか。こういった点も時々迷ってしまいます。

もう一つの大きな難しさは、敬語や人の呼び方です。カジュアルな日本語とフォーマルな日本語では、文法や語彙がかなり違いますよね。

例えば、母のことは「母」と言うべきなのか、それとも「お母さん」なのか。
相手の奥さんは「妻」なのか「奥さん」なのか。
私は男性なので、「私」「僕」「俺」のどれを使うのが自然なのかも状況によって変わります。

また、知り合いの人を呼ぶときも、「名字＋さん」がいいのか、それとも名前だけでもいいのか。もし関係がもっと親しくなったら、呼び方は変わるのでしょうか？

きっと、みなさんも英語を学ぶときにいろいろな苦労があると思います。発音やリエゾン（音のつながり）、語彙、単数形と複数形、現在完了形、条件文など……。

みなさんにとって、一番難しいと感じることは何ですか？

シュート！…そしてゴール！

モチベーションを保つためには、はっきりとした目標を持つことがとても大切です。外国語の学習は短距離走ではなく、むしろマラソンのようなものです。より流暢に話せるようになるためには、長い時間をかけて集中し、継続して努力していく必要があります。

もちろん、大きな長期目標を持つことは素晴らしいことです。でも同時に、もっと小さくて達成しやすい目標を設定することもとても重要です。そうすることで、目標を達成したときに脳の「ごほうびシステム」が働き、やる気を保ちやすくなります。

私の長期的な目標は、日本語でほとんどどんな話題についても、ストレスや不安を感じることなく話せるようになることです。また、日本語の映画を観たり、小説を読んだりするときに、辞書を手元に置かなくても理解できるようになりたいと思っています。

ただし、こうした目標はとても難しく、達成するまでには何年もかかります。そこで私は、もっと具体的で達成しやすい小さな目標も設定しています。

例えば去年の目標は、日本語能力試験のあるレベルに合格することと、日本語の小説を一冊読み切ることでした。この二つは、実際に努力して取り組み、達成することができる具体的な目標でした。

そして実際に両方を達成できたことで、長期的な目標に向かってこれからも頑張ろうという、新しいモチベーションが生まれました！

みなさんは、英語に関してどんな目標を持っていますか？
大きな目標でも小さな目標でも構いません。
そして、その目標に向かってどのように努力していますか？

まとめ

まとめると、なぜ英語を学んでいるのかという理由を理解すること、短期目標と長期目標の両方を設定すること、そして効率的で役に立ち、なおかつ楽しく続けられる学習習慣を作ることが、外国語を身につけるための大切なポイントです。

そして何よりも大切なのは、その過程を楽しむことです！

学習していると、うまくいかずにイライラしたり、圧倒されてしまったりする瞬間もきっとあるでしょう。でもその一方で、思いもよらない形で成長を実感できたり、海外の人と自然にコミュニケーションが取れたりする、そんな素晴らしい瞬間も必ず訪れます。

Learning to Love Learning Languages

Hello, everyone! It’s Nicky, back with another entry in ニッキーの日記！

In today’s post I will be discussing learning a foreign language: the good, the bad, and the ugly. We have all had experience with this topic to varying degrees, and I’m excited to share my perspective. What inspires someone to attempt learning a foreign language? Is it for fun or for work? Perhaps a mix of the two? What are some of the hurdles that must be overcome along the path to fluency? How can we stay motivated? All this and more in today’s blog!

Why, why, why?

The most important one must ask themself when embarking on a language journey is simply this: why? For what reason are you working hard to achieve this goal? In Japan, of course, essentially everyone has to study English in junior high school and high school (even elementary school recently I’ve heard)! Although, actual results vary widely amongst students, most of whom simply check English off of their homework list alongside their litany of other courses. This is very similar to America, where everyone is required to take a foreign language in middle school and high school. Most take Spanish for years, and most can barely say a single sentence with correct grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation after all that time. Motivation to get a good grade is high, but motivation to actually absorb and engage with the language is near non-existent.

For me, however, Spanish was one of the most enjoyable classes. It almost felt like being back in kindergarten – learning how to say my colors, numbers, days of the week, etc. all over again. Being fluent in another language was something I never imagined for myself, but the possibility of it was very enticing. Upon graduating high school, I knew I wanted to try studying a new foreign language in university. Though I had never watched anime, never read manga, and didn’t even know how to use chopsticks, I ultimately settled on Japanese. I thought hiragana looked very beautiful and I loved the pronunciation and rhythm of the language. The summer before university I bought a workbook to help teach myself hiragana and katakana, and the rest is history. 

These days, my study habits look quite different from when I was a beginner Japanese learner. I still personally enjoy using textbooks, but now ones that are entirely in Japanese without a drop of English to use as a crutch. I study flashcards daily and read novels to increase my vocabulary and kanji. I watch Japanese movies (with Japanese subtitles or no subtitles at all! Very important!) or listen to Japanese podcasts to improve my listening comprehension. I also sometimes digest short NHK news clips to find more obscure vocabulary and practice listening to more formal and official Japanese, which is quite different from daily speech.

Ultimately, what helps me is having a mix of serious and fun study activities! If I only use textbooks, I get bored and burned out. If I use only casual and fun resources, then I’m not developing many new skills. Balance is the key! How do you typically study English?

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows!

I greatly enjoy learning Japanese and have immensely benefited from my years of studying. But that doesn’t mean every moment has been smooth sailing! For example, kanji is, of course, the first thing people cower in fear of when they begin learning Japanese. With thousands of characters and thousands of yomikata, it really is a daunting challenge. Japanese also doesn’t have a large variety of sounds, so the overlap in yomikata can be difficult for me during conversations (eg 橋 vs 端 vs 箸). Should I put 見る or 観る? Does 先生に聞いてください mean ask the teacher or listen to the teacher? 

Another challenge is the formality and how to refer to others. Casual versus formal Japanese tends to use very different grammar and vocabulary. Is my mom 母 or お母さん? Is your wife 妻 or 奥さん? I’m a boy…so is it better to use 私 or 僕 or 俺 in this situation? Should I call my acquaintance Family Name-san, or just the given name is OK? If our relationship becomes closer will that change? 

I’m sure many of you all have struggles learning English as well. Pronunciation, connected speech, vocabulary, singular and plural nouns, present perfect tense, conditionals, etc. What is most challenging for you?

He shoots…he scores! Goal!

Having a clear goal is crucial for maintaining motivation. Learning a foreign language is a marathon, not a sprint, and you will need to keep focused and active for a long time in order to achieve better fluency. Having a big long-term goal is great, but setting smaller, more easily achievable goals is also crucial for activating the reward center in your brain. 

My long-term goal is to speak on most any topic in Japanese without feeling stressed or unsure of what to say. I’d also like to watch movies and read novels in Japanese without needing a dictionary close at hand. However, these are very challenging goals that take years to accomplish. My smaller goals for last year, for example, were to pass a certain level of a Japanese fluency test and read an entire novel in Japanese. These were two tangible goals that I was able to concretely work towards and achieve. Now that I have successfully done both, I have renewed motivation to continue towards my more long-term goals!

Conclusion

In conclusion, understanding why you are learning English, setting short-term and long-term goals, and building regular study habits that are efficient, beneficial, and fun are the keys to learning a foreign language. And most importantly: enjoy the process! There are going to be moments where you are frustrated and overwhelmed, but those will be equally matched by moments where you succeed in ways you never dreamed possible and have authentic interactions with people from abroad.

こんにちは！スタッフのキヌエです。普段は先生たちが書いてくれたブログを投稿する作業を担当していますが、私も書いてみることになりました。英語学習者目線の内容をお届けしたいと思っております。

さて、ケンジントン英会話で働きはじめて約1年半が経ち、よく質問されることがあります。それは「英語どうやって勉強したんですか？」「どうして英語を話せるんですか？」です。まだまだネイティブレベルではありませんが、私が話せるくらいの英語力になりたいと思っていただけるのは光栄なことです。ただ、この質問に一言で答えるのはいつも難しく、ゆっくりとお話する時間が無い場合は「大学で英語を専攻していました。」や、留学経験が理由となってしまいます。もちろん、間違いではありませんが、私の英語力が今のレベルになるまでは何か一つの大きな要因によってというよりは、これまでの日々の積み重ねだと思っています。今日は私がどうやって英語を話せるようになったのかをお話しいたします。

英語との出会いは至って普通

私は幼少期から英語のレッスンを習っていたわけでもなければ、海外に住んでいたわけでもありません。福岡県のとある田舎町でごく普通に近所の小、中、高校に通いました。周りに英語を話せる人などおらず、福岡弁（強め）で育てられました。私が子どものころは英語は中学から学校で授業が始まり、それまではアルファベットも言えるかどうか危ういレベルでした。

そんなある日、中学の授業で英語の歌を聴き感動したのを覚えています。何を言っているのか分からない歌詞を日本語で知って嬉しかったのだと思います。今思うとその頃から、英語が何となく好きだったのかもしれません。ALTの先生の授業や、異文化について知ることが楽しかったです。（世界地図をただただ眺めるのも好きでした！）高校に入ってホームステイの募集があった時は、全く英語を話せないのに「行きたい！」と思い、はじめての海外に目を輝かせて行きました。

英語だけが唯一好きな科目だったので、大学はとある外国語大学に進学しました。大学に入ってからは、授業やサークルを通して英語を話す機会はとても増えたと思います。それでも、今のようにはまだ話せませんでした。話すことだけでなく、アメリカの大学に留学するために筆記試験（IELTS）の勉強もたくさんしました。約一年の留学を経て帰国した際は、さすがに多少は話せるようになりましたが、それでも今のレベルではなかったと思います。

そうだ、本を読もう！

少し変わってきたな、と実感してきたのは働き始めて数年が経ってからのことです。ケンジントンに入る前も英語を話す必要のある仕事をしていました。英語の基礎をしっかりつけて、英語がある生活が当たり前になった時、はじめて自分のもののようになってきた気がします。

ちょうどその頃、イギリス人の友人が私に本をプレゼントしてくれました。英語学習用ではない、アイルランド人作家による英語で書かれた普通の小説です。「Thank you!」と言いつつも、絶対読み終わらない…と内心は思っていました。ところが、コロナが流行し時間ができてしまった私は取りつかれたように本を読みました。分からない単語があってもそのまま読み続けました。そしてその貰った一冊の本を読み終えた後、読解力だけでなく、スピーキング力においても何かが大きく変わったような気がします。

好きこそ物の上手なれ

振り返ってみると、学校のテストのために勉強をしても話せるようにはならないと思っていた子どもの頃にそれでも一生懸命勉強した時間、留学に行って右も左も分からないような環境で過ごした時間、英語ができると言って就いた職で苦労したすべてのこの20年近い時間から英語が話せるようになった理由だと思います。とはいえ、ケンジントンに入って先生たちと働いていると、まだまだ頑張らなくてはいけないと日々痛感しています。言語の習得は今日明日でできるものではありません。日々の積み重ねが実を結ぶ時まで、がんばっていきましょう！

ちなみに、友人から貰った本はSally Rooneyによる「Normal People」です。内容は少々過激な箇所もありますが、彼女の本はどれも比較的読みやすくおすすめです。ぜひ読んでみてはいかがでしょうか。それではまた。

Do You Speak English? – Say “Yes!” 

Hello! My name is Kinue, and I’m one of the staff members here. I usually post blog articles written by our teachers, but this time I’ve decided to write one myself! I hope to share my thoughts from the perspective of an English learner.

It’s been about a year and a half since I started working at Kensington Eikaiwa, and there’s a question I’m often asked:

“How did you study English?”
 “Why can you speak English?”

I’m far from native level, but I feel honored when people say they’d like to speak English like I do. However, it’s always difficult to answer that question in just one sentence. When there isn’t enough time to explain, I usually say, “I majored in English at university,” or mention my study abroad experience. Of course, those are not wrong—but I don’t think my English improved because of just one big reason. Rather, I believe it’s the result of many small efforts accumulated over time.

Today, I’d like to share how I became able to speak English.

My First Encounter with English

My introduction to English was nothing special.

I didn’t take English lessons as a child, nor did I live abroad. I grew up in a small rural town in Fukuoka Prefecture and attended local public elementary, junior high, and high schools. No one around me spoke English, and I was raised speaking strong Hakata dialect!

When I was a child, English classes started in junior high school. Before that, I could barely even say the alphabet.

One day in junior high, I remember listening to an English song in class and feeling deeply moved. I was so happy when I understood the meaning of lyrics that I couldn’t previously understand. Looking back, maybe that was when I first started to like English. I enjoyed classes with the ALT teacher and learning about different cultures.

In high school, there was an opportunity to join a homestay program. Even though I couldn’t speak English at all, I immediately thought, “I want to go!” I went abroad for the first time with excitement shining in my eyes.

Since English was the only subject I truly liked, I decided to attend a foreign language university. In university, I had many more opportunities to speak English through classes and club activities. Still, I couldn’t speak at the level I do now. I also studied hard for the IELTS exam in order to study at an American university. After spending about a year abroad and returning to Japan, I could speak much better than before—but still not at my current level.

“That’s It — I’ll Read a Book!”

I began to feel a noticeable change a few years after I started working.

Before joining Kensington, I had jobs where I needed to speak English. Once I built a strong foundation and English became a natural part of my daily life, it finally started to feel like my own language.

Around that time, a British friend gave me a book as a present. It wasn’t written for English learners—it was an ordinary novel written in English by an Irish author. I said “Thank you!” but honestly thought to myself, There’s no way I’ll finish this…

Then COVID happened, and I suddenly had more time. Almost obsessively, I started reading the book. Even when I didn’t understand some words, I just kept going. And when I finally finished that one book, I felt that something inside me had changed significantly.

The book was Normal People by Sally Rooney. Some parts are a bit intense, but her books are relatively easy to read, and I recommend them if you’re looking for something in English.

Loving Something Makes You Better at It

Looking back, I think all of it mattered:

The hours I spent studying hard for school tests—even when I believed studying alone wouldn’t make me fluent.
 The time I spent abroad in a confusing new environment.
 The struggles I faced in jobs where I claimed I could speak English.

It’s the accumulation of nearly 20 years of effort that allowed me to speak English today.

Even now, working with the teachers at Kensington makes me realize how much more I need to improve. Language learning doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the daily effort that eventually bears fruit.

Let’s keep doing our best until that day comes!

9年ぶりに帰った故郷：カンパラで過ごした冬休み【福岡市英会話】

みなさん、こんにちは！お元気ですか？少しずつ春の気配を感じられる季節になってきましたね。

今回のブログでは、クリスマスとお正月を過ごした故郷への帰省についてお話ししたいと思います。私は9年ぶりに、故郷であるウガンダのカンパラへ帰りました。本当に特別な旅になりました。

9年という長い時間を経ての帰省だったので、空港に到着した瞬間から胸がいっぱいになりました。懐かしい景色、匂い、空気、人々の声――すべてが一気に思い出を呼び起こしてくれました。

ちなみに、カンパラもその時期は「冬」なんですよ。とはいえ、日本のような寒い冬ではありませんが、それでも私にとっては久しぶりの故郷の冬でした。

これから、その特別な時間について少しずつシェアしていきたいと思います。

カンパラまでのフライト

今回の帰省では、いくつかのフライトを乗り継いでカンパラへ向かいました。

まず、関西空港から中国東方航空で中国・上海へ。その後、ドバイ（UAE）まで移動しました。ドバイではFly Dubai航空に乗り継ぎ、ウガンダのエンテベ（カンパラ）へ向かいました。

フライト時間はとても長く、何度か乗り継ぎもあったので、正直とても疲れました。でも、それ以上に「やっと帰れる」という気持ちで胸がいっぱいで、とてもワクワクしていました。

そしてついに到着。飛行機が着陸した瞬間、長い時間を経て自分の国に戻ってきたのだと実感し、心からほっとして、幸せな気持ちになりました。

街は変わっていた？

はい、街はさまざまな面で大きく変わっていました。

建物は以前よりも増え、車の数も多くなり、新しいお店や道路もたくさんできていました。正直なところ、少し外国人になったような気分になり、何度か道を尋ねることもありました。

さらに驚いたのは、私が育った地域で、両親の家が今では一番古い家になっていたことです。かつて知っていた近所の人たちはほとんど引っ越してしまい、新しく来た人たちがそこに住んでいました。また、以前の家はより大きな一軒家やアパートに建て替えられていたのです。

9年という時間の長さを、改めて実感させられる瞬間でした。

一番の思い出

一番の思い出は、家族や昔からの友人たちと一緒に過ごした時間です。

たくさん話して、たくさん笑って、そしておいしい地元の料理を思う存分楽しみました。長い年月を経て、再びみんなのそばで温かい時間を過ごせたことは、本当に素晴らしいひとときでした。

その時間の中で、これから数年のうちに母国へ本格的に戻り、家族や親戚、友人たちの近くで暮らしたいという強い気持ちが芽生えました。

まとめ

今回の帰省は、私にとってとても意味のある特別な旅となりました。9年ぶりに故郷へ戻り、街の変化を自分の目で見ることができただけでなく、懐かしい思い出の数々を改めて振り返ることもできました。

この冬休みに心から感謝しています。そして、この大切な体験をこうして皆さんと共有できることを、とてもうれしく思います。

Back Home After 9 Years: My Winter Holiday Trip to Kampala

Hello everyone! I hope you are doing well and starting to see, feel and smell the signs of spring. In this blog, I would like to share about my Xmas and new year holiday trip to my home city. I went back to Kampala, Uganda, after nine years, so it was a very special trip for me. Hmm…it was winter in Kampala, though.

The Flight or flights to Kamapala

I flew on China Eastern Airlines from Kansai to Shanghai China, then to Dubai UAE, where I connected to a Fly Dubai Airline flight that took me to Entebbe/Kampal Uganda. Yes, the flight was very long and took many hours with a few transfers. I was tired, but I was also very excited to go home. When I finally landed, I felt happy and relaxed because I knew I was back in my country after a long time.

Did the City Look Different?

Yes, the city did look different in many ways. There were more buildings, more cars,  many new shops and roads. In fact, I felt a little bit like a foreigner and I asked for directions to places a couple of times! I was also surprised to find out that my parents’ house is now the oldest one in the neighborhood where I grew up! And almost everyone I used to know has moved away. Their homes were bought by newcomers who replaced them with larger houses and apartment buildings.

What Was the Best Memory

The best memory was spending time with my family and old friends. We talked, laughed, and ate a lot of delicious local food together. It was wonderful to feel close to them again after such a long time. I felt a strong urge to return to my home country for good in the next few years to live close to my family, relatives and friends. 

Conclusion

This trip home was very meaningful for me. After nine years, I could see how my city has changed and also remember many good times from the past. I am very thankful for this winter holiday and happy to share my experience with you.

 今日は、私たちが誰でも持っているけれど、あまり意識していない「スキル」や「能力」についてお話ししたいと思います。

スキルの中には、外国語を話せることや楽器を演奏できることのように、分かりやすいものもありますよね。でもその一方で、普段の生活の中で何気なくやっている小さなことも、実は立派なスキルだったりします。

このブログでは、私自身のいくつかの経験をシェアしながら、自分のスキルについて話すときに使える便利な英語表現もご紹介していきます。

成長の中で身につけたスキル

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about something we all have but don’t always think about, our skills and abilities. Some skills are obvious, like speaking another language or playing an instrument, and others are small everyday things we barely notice. In this blog, I’ll share a few of my own experiences and introduce some useful English expressions you can use when talking about your skills.

Skills I Learned Growing Up

When we think about skills, the first place they usually start is school. In school, we learn the basics that shape everything else. Reading, writing, and doing math might not feel exciting now, but those are foundational skills we use every single day. Even simple things like giving a presentation in class or working on a group project helped build communication and problem solving abilities.

But learning doesn’t stop when we leave school. Some of the most important skills are learned outside the classroom. That’s where I learned how to ride a bike and later how to skateboard. Those weren’t just physical skills. They taught balance, patience, and how to get back up after falling.

Outside of school is also where we develop social skills. Making friends, reading the room, learning how to interact with different personalities, these things are not written in textbooks, but they are essential. In many ways, those everyday experiences shape us just as much as formal education does.

Skills We Use for Work and Hobbies

As adults, we constantly build new skills without even realizing it. For work at Kensington Eikaiwa, I need communication skills, including both English and Japanese skills, teaching skills, and time management skills. For hobbies, it might be having patience, being consistent, or having technical abilities such as computer skills.

Here are some useful phrases you can use when speaking about your skills:

“I had to learn how to manage my time better.”
This is very common for work situations. We can always use improved time management skills to make sure we’re getting things done on time!

“I’m still working on improving my English.”
This sounds humble and natural. This can be used when you are explaining a skill that you are constantly working on improving.

“Most of my skills came from experience, not school.”
A very realistic sentence that can be used when speaking about skills and abilities learned outside of the classroom.

For many people, skills don’t come from textbooks. They come from trying, failing, adjusting, and trying again. Something we call trial and error. Learning how to develop skills through this process becomes a skill itself.

Something New I Want to Learn

Even as adults, learning shouldn’t stop. There’s always something new we want to improve or finally commit to. For me, one thing I really want to focus on this year is improving my kanji skills, especially reading and writing. I can get by in daily life, but I know there’s still a big gap between understanding something casually and truly mastering it.

Reading kanji more smoothly and being able to write it confidently would make everyday life in Japan feel even more natural. It’s one of those skills that takes consistency and patience, not just motivation at the beginning of the year.

If you’re talking about something new you want to learn, here are some useful expressions:

“I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar.”
A natural way to talk about a long term interest. In this case, learning how to play an instrument.

“I’m thinking about taking a cooking class this year.”
You can replace “cooking” with anything, like English, yoga, or programming. Joining a class is a great way to start a new hobby or learn some new skills.

A great phrase to show a positive mindset and motivation.

みなさん、こんにちは！ニッキーです。今回も「ニッキーの日記」が戻ってきました！

今日の投稿では、世界中の多くの国で祝われている祝日、バレンタインデーについてお話しします。バレンタインデーは、一年の中でも特にロマンチックな日だと考える人が多く、パートナーや、これまで一緒に築いてきた愛を祝う日とされています。一方で、チョコレートやカードの売り上げを伸ばすための企業の策略にすぎない、と冷めた見方をする人もいます。どんな考え方であれ、とても興味深いテーマだと思うので、掘り下げていくのが楽しみです！

国境を越えたバレンタインの祝い方

同じ「バレンタインデー」という名前でも、アメリカと日本ではその祝い方がまったく同じというわけではありません。アメリカのバレンタインデーでは、男性がチョコレートや花、カードを用意し、さらにディナーの予約までするのが一般的とされています。女性もパートナーにプレゼントを贈ることはありますが、負担は圧倒的に男性側にかかることが多いです。

一方、日本ではこの男女の役割が逆転し、バレンタインデーには女性が男性にチョコレートを贈ります。その大きな理由の一つとして、アメリカにはホワイトデーが存在しないことが挙げられるでしょう。アメリカではバレンタインデーしか祝われないため、女性が公式にパートナーへ奮発する日がないのです。男性のみなさん、ごめんなさい！

私自身の話をすると、子どもの頃はバレンタインデーのディナーを家族と過ごすことがほとんどでした。というのも、2月14日は兄の誕生日でもあるからです。これは兄にとってかなりラッキーなことだったと思います。なぜなら、彼はアメリカでは珍しく、この特別な日に奥さんからも同じくらいプレゼントをもらえる男性の一人だからです。

大人になってからは、バレンタインデーを特別視せず、普段通りの一日として過ごすことが多くなりました。そして夜にパートナーと少し良いレストランで食事をし、その後は家に戻ってプレゼントを交換し、映画を何本も観る――そんな穏やかな過ごし方が定番になっています。

今夜、何を観る？

チョコレートや花以外で、バレンタインデーに欠かせないマーケティング要素といえば、やはり映画でしょう。恋愛やバレンタインデーをテーマにした映画は、ハリウッドでは数え切れないほどあり、毎年のように新作が公開されています。私は普段、ラブストーリーやロマンチックな映画をそこまで好んで観るタイプではありませんが、それでもこれまでに心に残った作品はいくつかあります。

個人的には、ロマンスだけでなく、しっかりとしたコメディ要素があり、さらに少しの悲劇が織り交ぜられている作品が好みです。そのほうが物語に深みが出て、より引き込まれる気がします。

特に印象に残っているのが、『Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind』と『Roman Holiday』です。どちらもとてもに美しく、よく練られたストーリーを持ち、典型的な恋愛映画の枠を超えた作品だと思います。男女が一緒に冒険をする物語ではありますが、単なる恋の行方ではなく、人生の状況やその人の過去が、いかに恋愛を複雑にしてしまうかに焦点が当てられています。

本当の愛は、「この人を愛しているから一緒になれる」というほど単純なものではありません。時には人生が別の道を用意していて、物事が思い通りに進まなかったり、関係が曖昧で複雑になったりすることもあります。これらの作品にはファンタジー要素も含まれており、『エターナル・サンシャイン』ではSF的な仕掛けが使われ、『ローマの休日』ではヨーロッパの王女という非日常的な設定が物語を彩っています。

一方で、もっと気軽に楽しめて、英語の勉強にもなるシンプルなロマンティック・コメディを観たい気分なら、『50 First Dates』と『Forgetting Sarah Marshall』がおすすめです。どちらもとてもユーモアがある心温まる作品で、舞台はなんと両方ともハワイ。寒い2月に、ロマンスと美しいハワイの景色で少しでも暖かい気分になりたい方には、ぜひこの2本を観てほしいです。

私のいちばん「甘い」思い出

小学生の頃、もちろんみんな恋愛をするにはまだ早い年齢でしたが、それでもバレンタインデーは児童たちが楽しみにしている行事の一つでした。というのも、アメリカでは小学校の児童全員が、授業の一環としてクラスのパーティーでさまざまな祝日をお祝いするからです。ハロウィンや感謝祭、クリスマス、そしてバレンタインデーなどが、毎年何らかの形で教室で祝います。

私が通っていた小学校では、バレンタインデー当日、児童たちはそれぞれ自分でデコレーションした靴箱を学校に持ってきました。箱は自由に飾ってよくて、自分の個性が出るように工夫しつつ、バレンタインらしい要素を少し取り入れるのが定番でした。また、クラス全員に配れるだけの、個包装のお菓子を持ってくる必要もありました。

バレンタインデーのパーティーが始まると、児童たちは自分の靴箱を机の上に置き、教室を歩き回って、持ってきたお菓子をクラスメイト一人ひとりの靴箱に入れていきます。全員にお菓子を配り終えると、それぞれ席に戻り、友だちとおしゃべりをしたり、映画を観たりしながら、砂糖たっぷりの“宝物”を楽しむのです。

毎年、自分の靴箱を飾ることも、クラスメイトがどんなデザインにしたのかを見ることも、本当に楽しみでした。文字通り、そして気持ちの上でも、とても「甘い」伝統だったと思います。

恋のキューピッドの矢の結末

恋人がいるかどうかに関わらず、バレンタインデーは誰もが楽しめる祝日だと、私は思います。たとえばアメリカでは、友人同士でバレンタインカードやちょっとしたプレゼントを交換することも珍しくありません。周りの人に愛を伝えるのに、遅すぎるということはないのです。

たとえ小さなチョコレート一つでも、「あなたのことを思っている人がいる」と分かるだけで、その人の一日を驚くほど明るくしてくれることがあります。

Love Is in the Air!

Hello, everyone! It’s Nicky, back with another entry in ニッキーの日記！

In today’s post I will be discussing Valentine’s Day, a holiday celebrated in many countries all around the world. Many consider it to be one of the most romantic days of the year, where you can celebrate your partner and the love you have crafted together. Some more cynical people, however, see the holiday as a corporate ploy to increase sales for chocolates and cards. Whatever your perspective is, it’s an interesting topic that I’m excited to dive into!

Celebrating Across Borders

Though the holiday shares the same name, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated identically between America and Japan. On Valentine’s Day in America, men are expected to buy the chocolates and flowers and cards, as well as make all the dinner reservations. The woman may buy a gift for her partner as well, though the burden is much more so on his side. In Japan, however, these gender roles are reversed, with the woman giving chocolate on Valentine’s Day. A large reason for this, it seems, is the absence of White Day in America. Since we only celebrate Valentine’s Day, there is no official day where women are expected to splurge on her partner. Sorry, fellas!

As for me, growing up I actually had to spend most of my Valentine’s Day dinners with family, as February 14th happens to be my brother’s birthday. I’d say that’s pretty lucky for him, as he is one of the few men in America who can expect to get equally showered with gifts by his wife on this special day. Since becoming an adult, though, I typically spend Valentine’s Day as normal, just like any other day, and then go to a nice dinner with my partner followed by a gift-exchange and movie marathon back at the apartment.

What Should We Watch Tonight?

One major source of marketing beyond chocolates and flowers, of course, is movies! Movies centered around romance or Valentine’s Day are a dime a dozen in Hollywood, with new ones being released each year. Though I am not typically the biggest fan of love stories or romantic movies, there are a few that have stood out to me over the years. I tend to lean towards romance films that have a good deal of comedy as well as a touch of tragedy thrown into the mix. This makes the story more engaging for me, personally. 

In particular, films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Roman Holiday” stand out in my memory. These are absolutely beautiful films with well thought-out stories that go beyond the typical mold of a love story. Though they center around a boy and girl going on an adventure together, these stories focus more on how life circumstances and a person’s history can disrupt a romance. Real love is not as simple as “I love this person so we can be together.” Sometimes life has other plans for you and things become muddled and complicated. These films also offer some fantastical elements, such as “Eternal Sunshine” featuring some science-fiction twists and “Roman Holiday” centering around a European princess. 

If you’re in the mood for some English practice with a simple, straight-forward rom-com, though, I have always had a soft spot for “50 First Dates” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, two very funny and sweet movies that both happen to take place in Hawaii. If you want some romance mixed with scenic Hawaiian views to keep you warm during this chilly month of February, I highly recommend those two!

My Sweetest Memory

In elementary school, despite the fact that obviously everyone is too young to date, Valentine’s Day was still an occasion that students looked forward to. This is because in America all elementary school students celebrate holidays with a class party! Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc. are all celebrated to some extent in the classroom each year.

At my elementary school on Valentine’s Day, all students came to school with a shoebox that they had customized themselves. You can decorate the box however you like and have it match your personality, typically with a touch of Valentine’s theming as well. You also need to bring some individually-wrapped candies to school, with enough to give at least one to each student in your class. During the Valentine’s Day party, students place their shoeboxes on their desk. They then walk around the room and distribute the candy they brought into everyone else’s shoebox. Once all the candy has been passed around, students return to their seats and get to enjoy their new sugar-coated treasures while chatting with friends or watching a movie.

Each year I always really looked forward to both decorating my own shoebox and seeing how my classmates decorated theirs as well. It’s a very sweet tradition, both literally and figuratively!

The Conclusion for Cupid’s Arrow

Whether you have a romantic partner or not, I still believe that Valentine’s Day is a holiday that can be enjoyed by all! In America, for example, it is not uncommon to exchange Valentine’s amongst friends as well. It is always the right time to show love to those around you! Even something as small as a piece of chocolate can make a person’s day infinitely brighter, just knowing that someone is thinking about them.

こんにちは、みなさん！新年はいかがお過ごしでしょうか。2月の寒い季節ですが、暖かくして過ごしていますか。

このブログでは、「学ぶこと」についてお話ししたいと思います。学ぶとはどういうことなのか、なぜそれが私たちの日常生活にとって大切なのか、最近私が学んだこと、そしてこれから学びたいことについて書きます。学ぶことは学校だけで行うものではなく、私たちはいつも学び続けています。このブログが、みなさん自身の「学び」について考えるきっかけになればうれしいです。

学ぶこととは何か？

学ぶこととは、新しい知識・技能・考え方・視点・理解を身につけることです。学習は、新しいことに挑戦したり、練習したり、以前より深く理解できるようになったときに起こります。例えば、新しい英単語を勉強するとき、それは学習です。新しい料理の作り方を学んだり、自転車に乗れるようになったり、スマートフォンのアプリの使い方を覚えたりすることも、すべて学習です。人の名前を覚えることや、通勤・通学でより早く行ける方法を見つけることのような小さなことでも、それは学ぶことです。学ぶことは、私たちが成長し、人生でできることを増やす助けになります。

最近学んだこと

最近、私はブリトー（さまざまな具材を大きな小麦粉のトルティーヤで包んだメキシコ料理）の作り方を学びました。動画を見て、何度も練習しました。特に、具材を包み込むようにトルティーヤを折るのが私にはとても難しかったです。でも、今ではとても簡単で楽しくできるようになりました。しかも、家族は私のブリトーが大好きです！学ぶためには、好奇心と練習が必要ですよね。

将来学びたいこと

私は将来、たくさんのことを学びたいと思っています。その一つが、日本の生け花です。私は生け花の作品を見るたびに、そのシンプルさと美しさにいつも魅了されてきました。生け花の繊細なバランスは、とても自然に見え、まるで人の手が一切加えられていないかのようです。生け花を身につけるには、多くの練習と努力が必要だと思いますが、ぜひ挑戦してみたいです。将来は、自分の母国であるウガンダで、生け花の作品を披露して人々を驚かせたいと思っています。

学ぶことは一生続く旅です。私たちは勉強から、失敗から、そして他の人々から学びます。大きなことでも小さなことでも、新しく理解できたことはすべて学びです。一緒に学ぶことを楽しみ、これからも新しいことに挑戦し続けましょう！

Introduction
 Hello everyone! How is the new year going so far? I hope you are keeping warm in the chilly February weather. In this blog, I want to talk about learning—what it means and why it is important in our daily lives, what I’ve learned lately and what I would like to learn in the future. Learning is something we do all the time, not only in school. I hope this blog helps you think about your own learning too.

What Is Learning?

Learning means getting new knowledge, skills, ideas, perspectives and understanding. It happens when we try something new, practice, and understand more than before. For example, when you study new English words, you are learning. When you learn how to cook a new dish, ride a bike, or use a smartphone app, that is also learning. Even small things—like remembering a person’s name or finding a faster way to go to work—are learning. Learning helps us grow and do more things in life.

Something I Learned Recently

Recently, I learned how to make a burrito (a Mexican dish featuring a large flour tortilla tightly wrapped around various fillings). I watched a video and practiced several times. Folding the tortilla  wrapped around the fillings was especially hard for me! But now it’s quite easy and fun. Plus, my family loves my burritos! Learning needs curiosity and practice, doesn’t it?

Something I Want to Learn in the Future

I want to learn many things in the future. One of them is Japanese flower arrangement or ikebana. I’ve always been fascinated by the simplicity and beauty whenever I see ikebana arrangements. The delicate balance of an ikebana arrangement looks completely natural, as though no human hands ever touched it! I think it is going to take a lot of practice and dedication to learn ikebana, but I want to try. I want to wow people in my home country (Uganda) with my ikebana arrangements in the future. 

In conclusion

Learning is a lifelong journey. We learn from study, from mistakes, and from other people. Big or small, every new thing we understand is learning. Let’s enjoy learning together and keep trying new things!
