こんにちは。蒸し暑い夏が続いていますが、みなさん元気に、そして涼しく過ごせていますか。今日は「思い出」についてお話ししたいと思います。思い出はとても特別なものです。幸せだった時間や、大切な人たち、そして心に残る素晴らしい経験を思い出させてくれるからです。
思い出とは、過去の出来事を覚えていることです。
私の一番古い思い出の一つは、とても幼い頃のクリスマスの朝、祖母の家の庭で兄弟やいとこたちと一緒に、おしゃれな服を着て教会へ行く準備をしていたことです。細かいことまでは覚えていませんが、そのときの幸せな気持ちやワクワクした気持ち、そして安心感は今でも覚えています。何年経った今でも、この思い出を振り返ると温かい気持ちになります。
“That brings back memories.” は、”This makes me remember something from long ago.”「それを見たり聞いたりすると昔のことを思い出す」という意味の英語表現です。
写真や音楽、香り、場所など、何かをきっかけに昔の出来事がふとよみがえったときによく使われます。日本語では、「懐かしいなあ」「それを見ると昔を思い出す」「思い出がよみがえるね」といったニュアンスに近い表現です。＿

わあ、その曲を聴くと昔の思い出がよみがえるよ。高校時代に戻ったような気持ちになる。

この公園を見ると、子どもの頃の思い出がよみがえる。
景色や音、匂いが昔の思い出をよみがえらせることがあります。私にとっては、図書館にある本の匂いをかぐと学生時代を思い出します。学校は子どもの頃から10代、そして若い大人になるまで、私の人生の大切な一部でした。だから、本の匂いをかぐと、当時の幸せな気持ちや希望に満ちた思い出がよみがえるのです。
みなさんは、大切なものを忘れてしまったことはありますか？きっと誰にでも一度はありますよね。もちろん私にもあります。それも一度だけではありません。
数年前、私はケンジントンの六本松校の鍵を家に忘れてしまったことがありました。レッスン開始の9～10分ほど前に学校へ着いたのですが、当時は今のように予備の鍵を校舎の外に保管していませんでした。
私はすぐに上司のジェイミーへ電話をし事情を説明し、レッスンをキャンセルしなければならないかもしれないと伝えました。すると、問題解決がとても得意なジェイミーは、すぐに自転車に乗って鍵を届けに来てくれたのです。
なんと、西新から六本松までわずか6分で駆けつけてくれました。本当に驚きました。
レッスン開始の3～4分前には生徒さんも到着し、予定どおりレッスンを行うことができました。
この出来事以来、私は以前よりもずっと忘れ物をしないよう気を付けるようになりました。
思い出は、私たちの人生にとって大切な宝物です。思い出すと笑顔になれる出来事もあれば、大切なことを教えてくれる経験もあります。そして、何気ない日常のひとときが、いつか素敵な思い出になることもあります。

Hello there, I hope you’re staying cool and healthy in the steamy summer. Today, I want to talk about memories. Memories are very special because they help us remember happy times, important people, and exciting experiences.
A memory is something we remember from the past. One of my oldest memories is standing in my grandma’s yard with a couple of my siblings and cousins on a christmas morning all dressed up getting ready to go to church, when I was very young. I cannot remember every detail, but I remember feeling happy, excited and safe. Even after many years, this memory still makes me feel good.
That brings back memories…
“That brings back memories” is an expression that means “this makes me remember something from long ago.”
You use it when something—like a photo, song, smell, or place—suddenly reminds you of your past.
Example usage:
Wow, that song brings back old memories. It takes me back to my High school days.
Seeing this park brings back old memories of my childhood.
Sometimes a sight, sound, or smell brings back old memories. For me, the smell of books in a library reminds me of my school days. School was a very important part of my childhood, teens and young adulthood. So the smell of books brings back those happy and hopeful memories.
Have you ever forgotten something important? I think we all have. I certainly have—more than once. A couple of years ago, I forgot my key for our Roppomatsu school. I arrived about nine or ten minutes before class, and at that time we didn’t keep a spare key outside like we do now. I called Jaimie (my boss) to explain the situation and ask him to cancel the class. Instead, Jaimie—who’s an excellent problem solver—jumped on his bicycle and rushed over with his key. He made it from Nishijin to Roppomatsu in just six minutes. Incredible. Three or four minutes before the class started, the student arrived and was able to take the lesson as usual. Since then, I’ve been much more careful.
Memories are an important part of our lives. Some memories make us laugh, and some teach us valuable lessons. Even small moments can become wonderful memories in the future. What is your favorite memory? Please think about it and tell your teacher in your next lesson!

みなさん、こんにちは！Jaimieです。
長くケンジントン英会話に通ってくださっている皆さんの中には、グループレッスンのトピックを一通り受講したことがある方や、同じテーマを何度か受講されたことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか。
もちろん、同じレッスンを繰り返し受けることは決して悪いことではありません。復習ができるだけでなく、以前とは違った視点でテーマを考えられたり、新しいクラスメイトの意見を聞けたり、そして何より、ご自身の英語力の成長を実感できる良い機会になります。
とはいえ、「変化は人生のスパイス」とも言いますよね。そこで、この8月から新しいタイプのグループレッスンをスタートすることになりました！これまで以上に一つのテーマを深く掘り下げ、皆さんの英語力をさらに伸ばしていただける内容です。
実は、多くの生徒さんが「海外の映画を字幕なしで楽しめるようになりたい」という目標を持って入学されています。
ただ、これは決して簡単なことではありません。映画の英語は自然なスピードで話されるうえ、文化的な背景やジョーク、言い回しなども数多く登場するため、理解するのが難しい場面もあります。
実際、私の子どもたちも英語が得意で、日本と欧米両方の映画やドラマを見て育っていますが、それでも細かな文化的なネタや表現が分からないことがあります。
でも、ご安心ください！そんな皆さんのために、ケンジントンがお手伝いします。
新しいクラスでは、毎月1本、事前に映画をご覧いただきます。作品は、ディスカッションに適したテーマがあり、英語学習にも役立つものを私たちが厳選します。
レッスンでは、映画について意見交換、映画に登場した便利な英語表現やフレーズを学ぶ、少し難しい表現や、実際に使ってみたい表現を確認、次回までのライティング課題に取り組むなどを予定しており、映画を題材にしながら実践的な英語を学んでいきます。
また、ディスカッションの準備ができるよう、事前にQuizletで役立つフレーズもご用意しますので、安心してご参加いただけます。
このクラスは通常のグループレッスンよりも内容を深く掘り下げるため、レベル2・3の生徒様（グループ・プライベートともに受講可能）を対象としています。
グループ会員の方は、100分のレッスンを通常レッスン2回分として受講することもできますし、追加レッスンとして受講することも可能です。詳しくはスタッフまでお気軽にお問い合わせください。
レッスンは月に1回開催予定です。できるだけ多くの皆さんに参加していただけるよう、土曜日と日曜日で交互に開催します。
また、このクラスを企画したデニー先生とニッキー先生も、皆さんと一緒に映画について語り合えることをとても楽しみにしています！

Hello there everyone!
Some of you have been with us for a long time now and must have taken all of our group lesson subjects at least once or maybe more! Of course repeating classes is not a bad thing. It gives you a great chance to review and think about a topic from a different perspective, let’s you hear new group members’ opinions and also feel the progress you have made!
Variety is the spice of life they say though, so from this August we have decided to start introducing some new types of group classes for you to give you even more opportunities to go deeper into topics and further improve your already good English!
So many of our students join the school because they love foreign films and would like to be able to watch them without subtitles. This is no mean feat by the way because not only is the English always at natural speed, movies often contain cultural references that may be tough to follow! Even though my kids have pretty good English and have grown up consuming both Japanese and Western media, they still don’t quite catch some of those little things.
Never fear though, Kensington is here to provide as always! Our new class will be held once a month with a movie to be watched in advance which has been chosen by us for its theme and because it will make a great topic for discussion. We will be giving our opinion on the movie, looking at the useful language and phrases that may be difficult for you to understand or fun to use, and possibly giving some writing homework to do for the next lesson. We will of course be providing you with some useful phrases on Quizlet to prepare you for general discussion in the class too.
This will be a fairly in depth class so it will be available to level 2 and 3 students either group or private. If you are a group student you can take it as two of your regular classes (lesson will be 100 minutes) or you can take it as an extra lesson. Please ask our staff for details.
The classes will be held once a month, alternating between Saturdays and Sundays to give you all a chance to take them and also to let their creators (Denny Sensei and Nicky Sensei) have a chance to teach them because they are both as excited about teaching them as I hope you will be about taking them!

こんにちは。スタッフのキヌエです。
みなさん英語を勉強する理由は様々かと思いますが、生徒さんの中には海外旅行のために英語を勉強している方もたくさんいらっしゃいますよね。最近は行けていませんが、私もこれまで12ヵ国に行ったことがあります。どこも最高に素敵でしたが、今回はその中でも一番印象に残っているところ、また行きたいと思う場所をご紹介します。
「フェロー諸島」を知っていますか？フェロー諸島が私の一番思い出深い旅先です。アイスランド、ノルウェー、イギリスの真ん中辺りにあり、デンマーク自治領の小さな18の島からなる群島です。人の数より羊の数の方が多いとか。私はスウェーデンに住んでいた時に行ったので行きやすかったですが、日本からはとても遠く簡単に行けるところではありません。それでも、一生に一度は見る価値のある壮大な景色と自然が広がっています。空港から市街に向かうタクシーの窓から見た景色ですでに感動していたのを覚えています。
本当は公共バスに乗りたかったのに、人にきいてもさっぱり乗り場や出発時間が分からず高いタクシー代を払った苦い旅の始まりだった思い出も…そして、ご飯や宿、とにかく何でも高い！私は1人で行ったというのもありますが、レストランでご飯を食べるなんてもってのほか、スーパーで適当に何か買おうと思っても高すぎる！
何だか悪い旅話のような出だしになってしまいましたが違います。それでは気を取り直して、本題に戻りまた行きたいと思う一番の旅先になったお話をします。
私は車の免許も持っていないのでいくつかのツアーに参加しました。1つ目は、フェロー諸島の名所を巡るプランだったのですが、迎え来たのは自家用車のような普通の車にガイドの男性と、参加者と思われる男性が1人乗っているだけ。てっきり、大型バスで10人くらいは参加者がいるものと思っていた私は、見知らぬ男性2人と車に乗って大丈夫なのか？！と内心不安に思いながら参加しました。（結果、お2人とも優しい方でした。）
フィヨルドの入り江にある小さな集落、昔ながらのカラフルな家の屋根には芝生が美しく、羊があちこちにいて、黒い羊のかわいさに虜になりました。木はほとんど生えていないことにも驚きました。曇りがちのフェロー諸島では珍しく一時的に晴れ間があり、せっかくだから車を停めて少し散歩しようとガイドさんに連れられた道は、私の「少し」の感覚とはまったく違い非常にきつかったですが、崖の上から見た景色はまるで心配することなど何もない、自信に満ち溢れたように感じさせてくれるような空気で、最高に素晴らしかったです。
2つ目は、ボートに乗るツアーでした。フェロー語とデンマーク語でしか音声ガイドがないし、アジア系でしかも1人で来ているのは私だけのようで、ちょっと寂しいなあと思っていた時、隣に座っていたデンマーク人のおじいさんが「来るとき同じ飛行機で近くに乗っていたよ。また会うとは偶然だね。」と英語で声をかけてくれました。飛行機でもアジア系は私だけだったようなので、覚えてくれていたのでしょうか。他にもいろいろ話をしてくださり嬉しかったです。ボートは時々とても荒く揺れて怖かったですが、違う角度から見るフェロー諸島もまたとてもきれいでした。
3つ目のツアー？というよりイベント？は、一般家庭におじゃまし一緒にお茶をして、近所を散歩するというもの。そのお宅までは公共バスで向かったので、間違っていないかどきどきしていました。孤立した群島のためか、グーグルマップもまるで手書きのような地図が表示されびっくりしたものです。でも、そのどきどきの道中でハッピーだったことが1つ。前日に乗ったバスとたまたま同じ車両だったようで、失くしていたお気に入りのニット帽がそこにあったのです！ともあれ、老夫婦のお宅におじゃまし、フェロー諸島での生活を地元の方から実際にうかがい、家の中を見させていただいたのはとても良い経験でした。地元の人が普通に生活している集落が観光地でのあることをどう思うかや、街中で暮らしている私たちにとっては「何もない」と思われる場所での生活など、ただ観光しているだけでは知りえない話をきくことができました。
フェロー諸島には「海のピエロ」とも呼ばれるパフィンという鳥が生息しています。くちばしがオレンジ色でかわいらしいのが特徴です。パフィンを目当てにバードウォッチングへ訪れる人もたくさんいるようです。この旅行では残念ながらパフィンがよく見れる季節ではなかったので私はハッキリと目視はできませんでした。また行く機会がいつかあればバードウォッチングをしたいと思っています。そして車を運転できる人と今度は行きたいですね。でも、ガイドさんは1メートル先も見えないような霧の中でも当たり前のように運転していたので、運転は相当高いスキルが求められるかもしれません。
私は何をきっかけに、フェロー諸島に行ってみたいとずっと思っていたのかは忘れてしまいましたが、このブログをきっかけにみなさんもフェロー諸島に興味を持っていただけましたら嬉しいです。

Hello, this is Kinue.
I’m sure everyone has their own reason for studying English, but many of our students are learning it so they can travel abroad. Although I haven’t traveled much recently, I’ve been lucky enough to visit 12 countries. Every destination was wonderful, but today I’d like to introduce the place that left the biggest impression on me—and the one I’d love to visit again someday.
Have you ever heard of the Faroe Islands? They are, without a doubt, the most memorable place I’ve ever traveled to. Located roughly halfway between Iceland, Norway, and the UK, the Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 small islands that are an autonomous territory of Denmark. It’s often said that there are more sheep than people there!
I visited the Faroe Islands while I was living in Sweden, so it was relatively easy for me to get there. From Japan, however, it’s a very long journey and certainly not the easiest destination to reach. Even so, the breathtaking scenery and untouched nature make it a place that’s worth visiting at least once in your lifetime.
I still remember being amazed by the view from the taxi window on the way from the airport to the city. Ironically, my trip didn’t get off to the best start. I had wanted to take the public bus, but no matter who I asked, I couldn’t figure out where it left from or when it departed, so I ended up paying for an expensive taxi instead.
And speaking of expensive—everything was! Food, accommodation, transportation… almost everything cost far more than I expected. Since I was traveling alone, eating at restaurants wasn’t really an option, and even buying something simple at a supermarket felt surprisingly expensive. This is starting to sound like a terrible travel story, isn’t it? But trust me—it wasn’t! So, let’s move on to the reasons why the Faroe Islands became my favorite place to travel.
Since I don’t have a driver’s license, I joined several local tours during my stay.
The first was a sightseeing tour around some of the Faroe Islands’ most famous attractions. When my ride arrived, however, I was surprised to see what looked like an ordinary private car with only the guide and one other participant inside. I had imagined a large tour bus with ten or so people, so I couldn’t help wondering, “Is it really okay to get into a car with two strangers?” Fortunately, both of them turned out to be incredibly kind.
We visited small villages nestled beside peaceful fjords, where traditional colorful houses with grass-covered roofs blended beautifully into the landscape. Sheep were everywhere, and I completely fell in love with the adorable black sheep. One thing that also surprised me was how few trees there were.
The Faroe Islands are usually cloudy, but we were lucky enough to have a brief spell of sunshine. The guide suggested we stop for “a short walk.” As it turned out, his idea of “short” was very different from mine! The hike was much more challenging than I expected, but when we finally reached the top of the cliffs, the view was beyond words. Standing there, surrounded by endless nature, I felt as though all my worries had disappeared. It was a place that somehow filled me with confidence and peace at the same time.
The second tour was a boat trip. Unfortunately, the audio guide was available only in Faroese and Danish. I also seemed to be the only Asian traveler—and the only person traveling alone—which made me feel a little lonely at first.
Then, the elderly Danish man sitting next to me smiled and said in English, “You were sitting near me on the flight here. What a coincidence to see you again!”
Since I had been the only Asian passenger on the flight, he must have remembered me. We chatted throughout the trip, and I was grateful for his kindness. The sea was rough at times, and the boat rocked quite violently, but seeing the islands from the ocean gave me a completely different and equally beautiful perspective.
The third experience was less of a tour and more of a local community event. I visited a family’s home for tea and then took a walk around their neighborhood together.
I traveled there by public bus, and I remember feeling nervous the entire way, hoping I hadn’t gotten on the wrong one. Perhaps because the islands are so remote, even Google Maps looked surprisingly simple—almost like a hand-drawn map!
That nervous journey turned into a happy one, though. By pure chance, it was the very same bus I had ridden the day before, and my favorite knitted hat, which I thought I had lost, was still there waiting for me!
Visiting the elderly couple’s home was one of the highlights of my trip. Hearing about everyday life in the Faroe Islands directly from local residents and seeing the inside of their home gave me insights that ordinary sightseeing never could.
We talked about what they thought of tourists visiting the small villages where local people simply go about their daily lives, and what it’s like to live in a place that many city dwellers might describe as “having nothing.” It was a fascinating conversation and one that made me appreciate the islands even more.
The Faroe Islands are home to the puffin, a bird often called “the clown of the sea.” With its bright orange beak and charming appearance, it’s one of the islands’ most beloved animals. Many visitors come specifically for puffin watching.
Unfortunately, I visited outside the best season, so I wasn’t able to see them clearly. If I ever have the chance to return, birdwatching will definitely be at the top of my list.
Next time, I’d also like to travel with someone who can drive! That said, after watching my guide confidently drive through thick fog where visibility was less than a meter, I realized that driving in the Faroe Islands probably requires some serious skill.
To be honest, I can’t even remember what first inspired me to visit the Faroe Islands. Somehow, the idea simply stayed with me until I finally made the trip.
I hope this blog has inspired you to learn a little more about this unique group of islands. And who knows? Maybe one day you’ll find yourself standing on those beautiful cliffs, too.

こんにちは！
もうすぐ夏ですね。最近は雨の日が続いていますが、少しずつ暑さを感じる日が増えてきました。ここ2年ほどを振り返ると、7月にこれほど雨が続いた記憶がないので、今年は少し不思議な気がしています。
多くの人にとって、夏は旅行やお祭り、アウトドアなどを楽しむ季節ですよね。私にとって夏は、「もう一年の半分以上が過ぎたんだな」と時間の流れを感じる季節でもあります。そして、日が長いこの時期を思い切り楽しみたいと思わせてくれる季節でもあります。
今回は、私が夏に好きなことや、日本の夏について感じていること、そして子どもの頃の夏の思い出についてお話ししたいと思います。
今年の夏は特に大きな予定はありませんが、それでも夏ならではの楽しみ方があります。
私は福岡の海の近くに住んでいるので、海辺を散歩しながら潮風を感じる時間がとても好きです。忙しい一日の終わりに海を眺めながら歩くと、気持ちがリフレッシュされて、頭の中もすっきりします。
また、夏は家族と過ごす時間が増える季節でもあります。子どもたちは外で遊ぶのが大好きなので、一緒に公園へ行ったり、サッカーをしたりして楽しんでいます。夏の思い出は、意外とそんな何気ない時間の中で生まれるものかもしれません。
もちろん、多くの学生にとっては夏休みの季節でもあります。私は毎年、生徒のみなさんから夏休みの予定や、休み中に体験した出来事を聞くのを楽しみにしています。どんな思い出話が聞けるのか、今からとても楽しみです。
私はナイジェリア出身なので、日本に来る前は「暑さには慣れている」と思っていました。でも、日本の夏を経験して、その考えはすぐに変わりました！
日本の夏は、とにかく暑いうえに湿度も高く、本当に大変です。少し歩いただけでも、まるでマラソンを走り終えたように汗だくになってしまいます。
暑さを少しでも和らげるために、私はこまめに水分をとり、できるだけ日陰を歩くようにしています。また、一日の中でも特に暑い時間帯は、長時間外にいるのを避けるようにしています。それでも外にいる時間が長くなりそうなときは、コンビニやスーパーに少し立ち寄って涼むこともあります。ただ、そのたびに予定していなかったものまで買ってしまうのが唯一の困りごとですが。
それでも、日本の夏ならではの雰囲気はとても気に入っています。夏祭りや花火大会、そしてこの時期ならではの季節の食べ物など、街中で「夏が来た！」と感じられる場面がたくさんあります。そんな季節感を楽しめるのも、日本の夏の魅力の一つだと思います。
ナイジェリアで育った私にとって、夏は日本とは少し違うものでした。以前のブログでもお話ししましたが、ナイジェリアには日本のような四季がありません。それでも、長い学校の休みは毎年とても楽しみにしていました。
子どもの頃の一番の思い出は、朝から夕方まで友達と外で遊んでいたことです。ほぼ毎日のようにサッカーをしていて、夢中になりすぎて、親が私たちを探しに来ることもよくありました。
今振り返ると、とてもシンプルな毎日でしたが、あの頃は子ども時代の中でも特に幸せな時間だったと思います。高価なおもちゃや特別な遊びは必要ありませんでした。サッカーボールが一つと、一緒に遊ぶ友達、そして元気いっぱいの体があれば、それだけで十分だったのです。
年齢を重ねるにつれて、少しずつ興味や過ごし方も変わってきました。20代の頃は旅行などアクティブに過ごす夏が多かったのですが、今では以前よりものんびりと夏を楽しむようになりました。人生のさまざまな時期を異なる国で過ごしてきたことも、その変化に影響しているのかもしれません。
そのあたりのお話は、また別の機会にブログでご紹介できればと思います。
夏の過ごし方は、人それぞれです。
旅行や新しい体験を楽しむ人もいれば、家族や友人とゆっくり過ごし、何気ない時間を大切にする人もいるでしょう。
いよいよ夏本番が始まります。今年の夏が、みなさんにとって「楽しかった」と思える季節になることを願っています。

Summer is just around the corner, and the days are already starting to feel warmer, except for all the rain we’ve been having lately. It feels a little unusual because, if I remember correctly, it didn’t rain this much in July over the past two years. For many people, summer is a season of vacations, festivals, and outdoor activities. For me, summer is a reminder that the year is moving quickly and that it’s time to enjoy the longer days. In this blog, I’d like to share some of the things I enjoy about summer, my thoughts on Japanese summers, and a few memories from my childhood.
These days, I don’t have any big summer plans, but I still enjoy the season in simple ways. Since I live near the coast in Fukuoka, one of my favourite things is taking a walk by the beach and enjoying the sea breeze. It is a great way to relax and clear my mind after a busy day.
Summer is also a good time to spend more time with my family. My children enjoy being outdoors, so we often go to parks or play soccer together. Sometimes the best summer activities are the simplest ones.
Of course, summer also means school holidays for many students. I always enjoy hearing about my students’ vacation plans and the adventures they have during the break.
As someone from Nigeria, I thought I was already used to hot weather before moving to Japan. Then I experienced a Japanese summer!
The heat and humidity in Japan can be quite intense. Even a short walk can leave you looking like you’ve just finished running a marathon. To stay comfortable, I try to drink plenty of water, stay in the shade whenever possible, and avoid spending too much time outside during the hottest part of the day. When I do have to stay outside for longer, I sometimes step into a convenience store or supermarket just to cool off for a few minutes. The only problem is that I often end up buying things I never planned to buy!
One thing I really enjoy about summer in Japan is the atmosphere. There are summer festivals, fireworks displays, and seasonal foods everywhere. They are always a nice reminder that summer has arrived.
Growing up in Nigeria, summer felt a little different because, as I mentioned in one of my previous blogs, we don’t experience the four seasons in the same way as countries like Japan. Still, the long school holidays were always something to look forward to.
One of my favourite memories is spending time outdoors with friends from morning until evening. We played football almost every day, and sometimes we stayed outside so long that our parents had to come looking for us.
Those days were simple, but they were also some of the happiest moments of my childhood. There was no need for expensive entertainment. A football, a few friends, and plenty of energy were enough. As I grew older, my interests gradually changed. The adventurous summers of my twenties gave way to a more relaxed lifestyle. Living in different countries at different stages of my life has probably influenced that change. Maybe I’ll share more about that in another blog someday.
Summer means different things to different people. For some, it is a time for travel and adventure. For others, it is a chance to slow down and enjoy simple moments with family and friends.
As the summer season begins, I hope you find time to enjoy the things that make you happy. Whether it’s attending a festival, watching fireworks, spending time outdoors, or simply relaxing at home, I wish you a wonderful summer ahead.

こんにちは！暑い日が続いていますが、皆さんいかがお過ごしでしょうか。
今回は、日本の美しい伝統行事のひとつである「七夕（たなばた）」についてご紹介します。七夕は、ロマンチックな伝説や色とりどりの飾り、そして願いごとを短冊に書くという素敵な風習が受け継がれている、日本らしい魅力あふれるお祭りです。
このブログでは、七夕を英語でどのように紹介すればよいのかをお伝えするとともに、私自身の七夕の思い出や、アメリカにもある少し似た言い伝えについてもご紹介します。七夕の魅力を、日本の文化を学ぶ方にもわかりやすくお届けできればと思います。
七夕は、毎年7月7日に行われる日本の伝統的なお祭りです。英語では “Star Festival（星まつり）” と紹介されることが多く、織姫と彦星という二つの星の伝説に由来しています。
伝説によると、機織りの名手である織姫と、働き者の牛飼いである彦星は恋に落ちました。しかし、お互いに夢中になるあまり仕事をおろそかにしてしまいます。それを見た神様は二人を天の川の両岸へ引き離し、年に一度、七夕の夜だけ会うことを許しました。
七夕の日には、人々は願いごとを短冊と呼ばれる色とりどりの紙に書き、笹の枝に飾ります。また、学校や商店街、地域のイベントなどでは、折り紙や吹き流しなどの華やかな飾り付けが行われ、七夕の雰囲気を楽しみます。
英語で七夕を紹介するときには、次のような表現がよく使われます。
“Tanabata is a Japanese festival where people write their wishes on colorful paper and hang them on bamboo branches.”

私が日本の中学校に通っていた頃、学校で七夕を楽しむ機会がありました。クラスメイトと一緒に短冊へ願いごとを書き、それを笹の枝に飾ったことを今でもよく覚えています。
とてもシンプルな行事でしたが、日本の文化を身近に感じられる楽しい体験でした。短冊には、一人ひとり違った願いが書かれていました。「テストで良い成績が取れますように」「部活動で活躍できますように」「家族が元気で過ごせますように」など、さまざまな願いが並んでいて、みんながどんな未来を思い描いているのかを知ることができたのも印象的でした。
もし今、私が七夕の短冊を書くとしたら、「創作活動がこれからも順調に続きますように」、そして「世界中のさまざまな人との素敵な出会いがありますように」と願うと思います。
七夕の魅力は、願いごとを書くことを通して、自分の夢や目標について改めて考えるきっかけを与えてくれることではないでしょうか。
小さな伝統行事ではありますが、自分の希望を書き、それをみんなで共有することで、前向きで温かい気持ちになれる――それが七夕の素敵なところだと感じています。
アメリカには七夕とまったく同じようなお祭りはありませんが、「愛」や「星」をテーマにした物語や言い伝えはいくつかあります。
その一つが 「star-crossed lovers（運命に引き裂かれた恋人たち）」 という表現です。これは、運命やさまざまな困難によって結ばれることができない恋人同士を表す言葉として広く知られています。
代表的な作品といえば、ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』です。アメリカの作品ではありませんが、アメリカでもよく知られている名作で、対立する家同士に生まれた二人が恋に落ち、悲しい運命をたどる物語です。その切ない恋の姿は、年に一度しか会えない織姫と彦星の伝説を思い起こさせます。

七夕は日本ならではの伝統行事ですが、その背景にある「大切な人を思う気持ち」や「夢や希望を願う心」は、国や文化を超えて多くの人に共通するものです。だからこそ、七夕は世界の人々にも共感してもらえる魅力的なお祭りなのだと思います。

Hello everyone! I hope you are doing well and enjoying the summer season. Today, I would like to talk about one of Japan’s most beautiful traditional events, Tanabata. This special festival is a wonderful example of Japanese culture, combining a romantic legend, colorful decorations, and the simple tradition of making wishes. In this blog, I will explain how to describe Tanabata in English, share my own memories of the festival, and introduce a similar story from America.
Tanabata is a traditional Japanese festival that takes place every year on July 7th. It is often called the “Star Festival” in English because it is based on the story of two stars, Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are separated by the Milky Way and can only meet once a year.
The story says that Orihime, a talented weaver, and Hikoboshi, a hardworking cow herder, fell in love. However, they became so focused on each other that they neglected their responsibilities. As a result, they were separated by the gods and placed on opposite sides of the Milky Way. They are only allowed to meet once a year on Tanabata night.
To celebrate Tanabata, people write their wishes on colorful pieces of paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo branches. Many schools, shopping streets, and communities decorate their areas with beautiful handmade ornaments.

When I was in middle school, I lived in Japan and had the chance to experience Tanabata at school. I remember writing my own wishes on tanzaku and hanging them on bamboo with my classmates.

A famous example is Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Although it is not an American story, many people in America know this tale about two people who fall in love despite being separated by conflict, a true tragedy.
There are also many American traditions where people make wishes, such as “wishing on a shooting star.” The idea that stars can represent dreams, hope, and wishes is something that connects many cultures around the world. We have something very similar in Japanese culture too where we make wishes when we see a shooting star. That is of course, if you’re fast enough to say your wish three times while the shooting star is visible!
While Tanabata is uniquely Japanese, the feelings behind it, such as love, hope, and dreams for the future, are universal.
Tanabata is more than just a Japanese festival with beautiful decorations. It is a tradition that allows people to celebrate love, express their wishes, and think about their hopes for the future. From writing wishes on tanzaku in school to learning about the legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi, Tanabata is a wonderful part of Japanese culture. Even though other countries may have different traditions, the idea of wishing for a better future is something people everywhere can understand. So this Tanabata, why not write down your own wish and take a moment to think about your dreams? You might be surprised by how meaningful a simple wish can be.

みなさん、こんにちは！ ニッキーです。今回も「ニッキーの日記！」をお届けします。
今回の投稿では、アメリカの独立記念日として知られる「7月4日」についてご紹介します。独立記念日はアメリカの祝日のひとつで、私自身も一年の中で特に大好きなイベントです。
とても楽しいお祝いの日なので、今日はこのアメリカの文化や習慣について、みなさんにご紹介できることを楽しみにしています！
では、この祝日にはどのような歴史があるのでしょうか。
1776年7月4日は、アメリカが誕生した日です。当時のアメリカはイギリスから渡ってきた人々による植民地でしたが、人々はイギリス政府による課税やさまざまな法律の押しつけに不満を募らせていました。
そこで植民地の人々は、独立を勝ち取るためにイギリスに対して革命戦争を始めます。当初は勝利が難しいと考えられていましたが、見事に勝利を収めました。
そして、独立宣言に署名したことによって、アメリカ合衆国は正式に独立したひとつの国家として誕生したのです。
独立宣言が署名・採択されたのは、歴史ある都市、Philadelphia（フィラデルフィア）です。
独立宣言が発表されると、フィラデルフィアの街は歓喜と祝福ムードに包まれました。パレードや演説が行われ、人々は喜びを表して大砲を鳴らしたといわれています。実は、独立記念日と花火が結びついたのは、この頃が始まりだとされています。
そのため、独立記念日は愛国心あふれる祝日として知られ、花火は欠かせないものとなっています。
花火以外にも、この祝日にはさまざまな楽しみ方があります。街の中心部では大規模なパレードが開催され、多くの家庭では庭でバーベキューやプールパーティーを開き、家族や友人と一緒にお祝いします。
食卓には、ハンバーガーやホットドッグ、バーベキューリブ、トウモロコシの丸焼き、スイカなど、アメリカならではの定番メニューが並びます。子どもたちは手持ち花火を持って外を走り回り、笑い声を響かせながら楽しそうに過ごします。

独立記念日は、私が毎年楽しみにしている祝日のひとつです。
子どもの頃は、独立記念日が「祝日」であることをあまり意識したことがありませんでした。というのも、7月4日はちょうど夏休みの真っただ中なので、もともと学校はお休みだったからです。
それでも、毎年家族や友人と一緒に過ごすこの日は、私にとって特別な思い出がたくさん詰まった大切な日でした。
小さい頃は、いつも父方の親戚と一緒に独立記念日を過ごしていました。実は、親戚はこの祝日の発祥の地でもあるフィラデルフィアに住んでいるんです！
当日は祖父が所属するカントリークラブへ行き、家族みんなでお祝いをしました。会場には屋台や子ども向けのカーニバル風のアクティビティが並び、さまざまな料理を楽しめる豪華なビュッフェも用意されていて、とてもにぎやかな雰囲気でした。
日が暮れると、ゴルフコースのそばに椅子が並べられ、みんなで美しい花火を眺めました。その光景は今でも鮮明に覚えています。
大人になるにつれて、独立記念日は友人たちと過ごすことが増えました。プールサイドで日焼けをしながら、スイカやハンバーガーを思う存分楽しみ、夜になると花火を見るために見晴らしの良い場所へ車で向かいます。
どこで過ごしていても、誰と一緒にいても、独立記念日はいつも私にとって待ち遠しい特別な一日なのです。
最後に、独立記念日は歴史的な意味と現代的な楽しみの両方をあわせ持つ特別な祝日だと感じています。
この日は、アメリカという国がどのようにして誕生したのかを振り返るとともに、家族や友人と過ごしながら、夏ならではの楽しいひとときを満喫できる大切な機会でもあります。
ここ数年は独立記念日をアメリカで過ごせていませんが、いつかまた故郷に帰って、この特別な日をみんなと一緒にお祝いできたらいいなと思っています。

Hello, everyone! It’s Nicky, back with another entry in ニッキーの日記！
In today’s post I will be discussing the 4th of July, also known as Independence Day. This is a national holiday in America and one of my personal favorite times of the year. It is a really fun celebration and I’m excited to share about this custom with you all today!
So, what’s the backstory on this holiday, anyhow? July 4th, 1776 is the day America was born. Originally consisting of colonial settlers from England, people living in America became fed up with British taxation and other laws being imposed upon them. Thus, the colonists began a revolutionary war against the British in the hopes of gaining independence. Though the outcome was unlikely, the colonists managed to win and, upon signing the Declaration of Independence, the United States of America officially became a nation of its own.
The Declaration of Independence was signed and adopted in the history city of Philadelphia. Upon being signed, the streets of Philadelphia were ablaze with excitement and celebrations. There were parades, speeches, and even cannons being fired off with delight. This is where the association between the holiday and fireworks first began. It is an extremely patriotic holiday that is always accompanied by fireworks.
Beyond just fireworks, there are many other aspects of the holiday that people are able to enjoy. There are often large parades that run through the center of town. Many families have barbecues and pool parties in their backyards and invite friends and family to celebrate together, eating classic American foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, corn on the cob, and watermelon. Kids run through the streets with sparklers, giggling and dancing around.
There are also more ceremonial aspects to the holiday. As far as the eye can see there are red, white and blue decorations to commemorate the colors of the American flag. There are also often veterans of the American military who give speeches and remind everyone of the importance of American history and things we should be proud of and hold on to as ideals of our nation, as well as to honor those who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms. You will often hear our national anthem “The Star Spangled Banner” at events like these.
The 4th of July is always a holiday that I look forward to. As a child, it didn’t really occur to me that it was a public holiday, as it’s smack-dab in the middle of summer vacation and I wouldn’t have had school anyhow. Regardless, I always enjoyed the holiday with family and friends.
When I was younger, I used to always spend the 4th with my dad’s family – who just so happen to live in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the holiday! We spent the day at my grandpa’s country club, which had a quite grandiose setup with booths and carnival-style activities for kids, as well as a litany of various buffets for everyone to enjoy. Once it grew dark, chairs were set up by the golf course and everyone was able to enjoy a gorgeous display of fireworks.
As I grew older, I more often spent the holiday with my friends, gorging on watermelon and hamburgers and tanning by the pool, before driving to a lookout spot at night to watch the fireworks show. Regardless of where I was or who I was with, it was always a holiday I looked forward to.
In conclusion, the 4th of July is a holiday with both historical and modern significance. It allows us to remember the history of our nation and how it was formed, as well as spend time with family and friends soaking up the summer fun. Although I have not been in America for this holiday the past few years, I do hope I get to enjoy it back home someday!
